Pic of the Week!

Catching a near metrey tailor is very impressive in its own right, but catching one on fly is beast mode! This absolute beauty of a tailor was landed in the flats of Shark Bay by skilled angler Angus Line @angus_line, who also found himself some giant herring on fly while he was up there. Nice work Angus! Give his page a follow to stay up to date with his top quality fishing snaps. This great snap was taken by talented fisher/photographer @paris_sienna_

2023 ESPERANCE LAND BASED OPEN CLASSIC RECAP!
Congrats to everyone who had a crack in the recent Esperance Land Based Fishing Club's Open Classic! With a share of $8,000 in cash prizes up for grabs for the heaviest catch across numerous species, there were some solid fish brought into the weigh-in.

If you want a perfect example of why land-based fishing access and experiences need to be protected on the south coast – then the recent Esperance Land Based Fishing Club's Open Classic competition rang the bell loud and clear.

With 130 avid fishers competing, their hopes of snagging some impressive competition prizes rested on their cherished land-based fishing spots producing the goods for solid catches of fish species that thrive along the south coast – and it was another cracking year.

Given many of the spots fished during the competition were in areas where the DBCA has flagged sanctuary zones for the proposed south coast marine park, Recfishwest also attended the event and strongly encouraged the friendly attendees to have a look at the plans and have their say once they are released in the coming weeks.

Make sure you keep checking our channels to keep up to speed with developments and information on how to make a submission to DBCA through its public consultation portal.

Broome catches
Young Evie McCartney got in on the Barra Bash action as did hundreds of other fishers, with this great barra being plucked over the long weekend.

Boats

Reef fishing quietened down but Spanish mackerel catches were good out on the edges of Roebuck Bay, with plenty of fish over the metre mark hitting trolled Halco Laser Pros. Northern mulloway catches were few and far between but numbers are expected to pick up in coming weeks, while the moorings in Roebuck Bay produced tripletail in the 40-50cm range which showed a liking for small soft plastics and saltwater flies. Crab Creek fished well for threadfin and blue-nosed salmon and the odd barramundi with Nomad vibes or Jackall Squirrels working well on these species, but Dampier Creek was a lot quieter. Crab Creek and the Fingers also held mud crabs, while out from Thandoo Station mud crab and threadfin catches have been good. The mornings to midday should provide the best boating conditions this week, with low winds expected.

Shore-based

Barramundi fishing picked up in the Fitzroy River with Langi Crossing and Telegraph Pool the pick of the spots. Small barramundi were common in Willie Creek, which fished well for bream and mangrove jack. At the mouth of Barred Creek and the smaller creeks around Manari there were trevally and the odd queenfish, while coral trout have come from the snags at Gantheaume Point. Town Beach Jetty held bream, javelin fish, trevally and queenfish, while the Port Jetty was quieter but offered bigger queenfish and the odd bluebone. Squid have been caught from the rocks at Entrance Point and whiting were in reasonable numbers at Cable Beach and Coconut Wells. For the best tips and gear for your fishing expedition, make sure you visit the helpful pros at Tackle World Broome for advice and they will provide details on spots with the best access for a flick.
Exmouth catches
The Nomad Squidtrex plucked this lovely tusky recently aboard @onstrikecharters and this species pulls exceptionally hard for their size. Also one of the finest eating fish in the ocean.

Boats

The ramps have been very busy with the holiday hordes, but the fishing has been good despite windy conditions at times. Bigger boats that have headed out west encountered Spanish mackerel at the back of Ningaloo Reef and red-throat and spangled emperor on the inside. In the 80-150m depths, Rankin cod, red emperor and goldband snapper have been taken. Conditions have been windy around the islands but they have produced Rankin cod, spangled emperor and coral trout, with a few bluebone taken on Nomad Squidtrex jigs. Sailfish have been caught at the top of the Gulf with crews looking for bait balls, catching live baits and using them on circle hooks. The Gulf offered school mackerel, a few Spanish mackerel, blue-lined emperor, small Rankin cod and coral trout. A whopper 80cm coral trout was caught at King Reef recently. Manta rays have also entered the Gulf, accompanied by good numbers of cobia under their wings. Squid are in big numbers close to town and anglers in dinghies and kayaks hugging the shore have also done well on whiting. Just off the mouth of Wapet Creek a few mud crabs have been caught. The swell is a tad higher than usual at 2m throughout this week along with some pretty solid southerly winds, so most boats will tuck in close to the mainland or keep to the sheltered waters of the Gulf.

Shore-based

How's this for a catch off Dampier! Both @mdx_flyfishing and @tysonpalmer_ would've had their hands full going toe to toe with this beast of a giant trevally on fly in the Pilbara shallows!

Shore fishing was excellent this week, especially on the Gulf side with good catches of bream, whiting and flathead either side of Learmonth and plenty of squid off Learmonth Jetty. Soft plastics fished over broken ground accounted for most of the flathead. At the Town Marina bream, small trevally and mangrove jack have dominated catches. Squid have been taken on the marina’s ocean-side wall and also from the rocks at the industrial estate. Bundegi’s bait schools have been attracting the usual small trevally and queenfish, but this week a couple of solid Spanish mackerel were landed as well. When it hasn’t been too windy Tantabiddi produced whiting and spangled emperor, while around the Lighthouse spangled emperor have been caught along with school mackerel and queenfish. Wapet Creek held bream and javelin fish. Big thanks to the great crew from Tackle World Exmouth for their tips!

Kalbarri catches

Boats

With the swells dropping, boaties have been out targeting demersals mainly in the 15-20m depths with a few going out to the 30m mark. All these depths have fished well for pink snapper and baldchin groper. Dhufish have been harder to find, but a big one was caught close in near the cliffs south of town. Pelagic activity has remained quiet, but a crayfisherman found a big school of bonito smashing into bait schools north of town earlier this week. Both Saturday and Sunday morning could hold some promising boating weather for a punch out to target demersals, with low winds and a swell of about 1.8m expected until about 10am.

Shore-based

Pink snapper and cod catches have been good from the cliffs south of town, with a 78cm pinkie from Pot Alley one of the better fish landed this week. Big tailor came from north of Blue Holes and at Back Beach, while at Red Bluff a mulloway around the metre mark was caught. Wittecarra was a consistent spot for tailor up to 50cm with most anglers managing to get three or four in the mornings along with plenty of bull herring. A few mulloway around the 70cm mark have been caught in the Murchison River which also held good numbers of bream, mainly in the upper reaches. Whiting and a few cod have been caught on the flats, while the marina jetty had good numbers of chopper tailor in the evenings. Blue swimmer crabs, mostly undersized, have been caught at the mouth of the river and mud crabs have been about in reasonable numbers. Big thanks to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips as always!
Geraldton catches

Boats

Conditions have been getting better every day this week and with the weekend looking decent, demersal catches are expected to rise. Boaties have been slow out of the blocks since the demersal season reopened but they have been busy inshore, doing well on squid in front of the Batavia Coast Marina in 6-10m depths and also around Point Moore. Skippy catches have eased but Point Moore and Separation Point offered whiting and school mackerel. Pike and Samson fish have also been caught in these areas. Saturday arvo and very early Sunday morning could bode well for a bottom fish if you're thinking of heading out, with a 2m swell accompanied by lighter southerly winds. Monday to Wednesday starts blowing again with a higher swell.

Shore-based

Tailor have been about in very good numbers, with mostly chunky fish around the 40cm mark. Anglers have had little trouble getting a good feed of them at Flat Rocks and also in the evenings at Southgates. The tailor have been caught on both mulies and lures, with the Apia Punch Line 130 being particularly effective on them. Closer to town, Pages Beach and the Lighthouse offered yellowfin, school and sand whiting in the late evenings. The eastern breakwater and the rock groynes near Dome Cafe also fished well for whiting, while clearer water on the north side of Batavia Coast Marina produced squid. Drummonds Cove produced good tailor but the weed has been bad at times and Coronation Beach also held a few tailor as well as quite a few decent pink snapper. Drone fishers have fared best on the pinkies, but shore casters have caught a few as well. Big thanks to Geraldton Sports Centre for their report as always!
Lancelin catches
Peter Fullarton put young Rhys on to a nice gutter during one of his recent Tailored Treks tours, with the youngster finding some fat and healthy fish.

Boats

It’s been a tough start to the short demersal season and larger boats have only been getting out for a drop between the rougher periods of wind and swell. Despite this, fishers found a fairly even mix of the usual species including baldies, dhufish, breaksea cod and pink snapper, although most of the dhufish have been on the small side and it has been taking time to accumulate a decent bag. Best catches are mostly coming from depths greater than 35m. Traveling through the 30m depths has seen an abundance of tuna and most anglers who fished Saturdays comp at the Lancelin Angling Club weighed one in, which saw lots of fishers enjoy some sashimi eaten fresh after a tough day at sea. Smaller boats were battling to punch out wide but found plenty of pink snapper around the 10-12m depths in the burley trails on floated pilchard baits. Trolling small lures has been productive for herring and snook throughout the bay. The south-westerly wind is expected to drop off around midday on Saturday with a 2m swell, but expect it to become rough from 10am onwards on Sunday through to at least Wednesday morning.

Shore-based

Beach fishing wasn’t much easier with plenty of weed along the beaches and bogged 4WD's. The low tides throughout the day and evenings did not help the fishing either. When a clean gutter could be found in the mornings there were some school mulloway and big winter greenback tailor caught to 80cm. Wedge Island is currently seeing the start of a run of 45-50cm tailor, which usually roll through each spring. Beaches and the town jetty fished well for bread and butter species of herring and sand whiting. Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips as always and make sure you check out his Tailored Treks fishing tours!

Esperance catches

Boats

Excellent conditions have tempted many boats out wide, where at Termination Island huge skippy to 8kg have been landed, while on the Humilaria Reef breaksea cod to 3kg and dhufish averaging 8kg have been plentiful. Figure of Eight Island held 45-60cm nannygai in the 40-70m depths, while closer to town at Observatory Island tourists have been cleaning up on queen snapper to 8kg, 50cm-plus harlequin fish and 2kg breaksea cod. Tinnie fishers have tangled with Samson fish at Charley and Cull islands, while thumping blue groper have come from Black Island. There were lots of squid in Esperance Bay and big King George whiting in Wylie Bay, while boaties drifting in 10m depths off Fourth and West beaches did well on big sand whiting. Sunday is looking quite peachy for a send out in the boats, with very light northerly winds and a lower swell expected. Make the most of it!

Shore-based

The town has been enjoying a golden run of big gummy sharks averaging 15kg, with some over 20kg. The better spots for them have been Dunns and Tagon beaches, Thomas River and Kennedy’s Beach, where fishers should exercise caution as the track is wet there. Lots of the gummy sharks are about to pup, so care needs to be taken if releasing them. Among the gummy sharks have been quite a few 3-4kg mulloway, while at Thomas River skippy up to 4kg have been hanging about. Visitors have been having a ball on salmon, especially from the beaches on the west side of town. Most salmon have been caught on bait, but the 26g Ocean’s Legacy Sling Shot has been the go-to lure. Good mixed bags of herring, King George whiting and flathead have come from the foreshore at James Street, while Taylor Street and the Town jetties have held plenty of squid and big garfish at night. Bandy Creek Boat Harbour had plenty of herring, smaller King George whiting and just-size skippy. The first stretch of beach at Wylie Bay was good for sand whiting. Bream up to 40cm have been snaffling baits near the boat ramp at Woody Lake, while bream chasers who prefer to use lures have done well at Young River, although they need to keep an eye out for tiger snakes. Big thanks to Southern Sport & Tackle for their report as always!

Great Southern catches
Chris Dixon @dixonsfishing continued his great form on the south coast recently and soaked a few baits to find some fat and healthy breaksea cod. Chris takes all the safety precautions before fishing off the stones and always fishes with a friend, wears a lifejacket and the correct footwear and checks the conditions and swell is safe before dropping a line into the drink.

Boats

Excellent conditions have allowed boats out to the coral ground where nannygai, pink snapper, queen snapper and breaksea cod have been caught. Out from Cheynes Beach pink snapper, breaksea cod and Samson fish have dominated catches. Squidding was great in King George Sound and King George whiting catches have been reasonable there too, with most fish around the 40cm mark. This morning was pleasant until the wind returned from 2pm and unfortunately it's sticking around until at least Wednesday afternoon with grumpy swells.

Shore-based

The better land-based catches this week have come from beaches with structure, such as Cables, Lowlands and Sand Patch which offered herring, whiting and skippy. At the Tourist Rocks at Cheynes Beach herring, skippy and Samson fish were caught. With the swells down, the stones around West Cape Howe have produced some good catches, mainly Samson fish, but also queen snapper, pink snapper and breaksea cod, while a couple of big dhufish were lost at the base of the cliffs. Squid fishing has been hit or miss, but Middleton and Frenchman Bay were among the better spots for them as well as for sand and King George whiting, skippy and herring. Similar species have come from the Town Marina, but small pickers have been out in force there. Emu Point was good for squid and whiting as well, while Gull Rock held herring, skippy and King George whiting. A few resident salmon have been caught at the Sand Patch, Salmon Holes and Bornholm. Bream fishing in the King and Kalgan rivers is expected to pick up as the water becomes cleaner and grand final day is usually the time for mulloway chasers to dust off their gear and target them in the system. In the upper parts of the Wilson Inlet and the Denmark River bream have been caught. Big thanks to the crew from Trailblazers in Albany for their tips!

South West catches
There were a couple of stonker Samson fish landed this week off the South-West, with this donkey landed by Josh Italiano @josh_italiano in only 25m of water off Bunbury.

Boats

With the demersal ban lifted for the school holidays boaties have wasted no time getting among good-sized dhufish north and south of Bunbury in depths from 8-40m. The good news is they have been active in gentlemen’s hours, with the best bite time around mid-morning. White soft plastics have nailed plenty of dhufish and the bycatch has included the odd pink snapper, a few baldchin groper and some monster Samson fish over the 40kg mark. Off Eagle Bay and Canal Rocks kayak fishers have been getting small dhufish and the odd pink snapper. Tuna activity tapered off after last weekend’s blow, but squid catches have been good in the 12m depths. Squid have also been in good numbers in the 4-8m depths of Geographe Bay which also fished well for King George and sand whiting. Big cuttlefish were caught off Busselton. Boats trolling in the Leschenault Estuary did well on chopper tailor. It's expected to be choppy on the water tomorrow with moderate westerly winds and 2m swell, Sunday through to Tuesday is looking pretty gross unfortunately, but Wednesday at this stage should see great boating windows return.

Shore-based

The trusty Busselton Jetty has been cranking out big kraken's lately, with this 40cm+ hood landed by local fisher Wayne. If you're wanting to target squid off the jetty, keep an eye out for ink stains along the structure and you know you're casting in the right territory. Photo credit: @geographecampingtackleworld

Tailor catches have really picked up with beaches from Preston down to Bunbury’s Back Beach holding good numbers in the 40-50cm range along with herring, whiting and the odd pink snapper. South of Bunbury, Peppermint and Forrest beaches fished well for pink snapper and mulloway. At the Bunbury Cut there have been herring and chopper tailor and the odd flounder showed up. A few bream have come from the Collie River, while Busselton Jetty produced plenty of herring and some big squid, along with the odd mulloway and pink snapper at the end. Kudos to the crew from Whitey's Tackle for their tips!

@billy__jay__cyrus trusted his gut and ventured to a different brook recently in our South-West and it paid off beautifully, landing this cracker of a broodstock brown trout before releasing it to fight another day.
Wellington, Glen Mervyn and Harvey dams have been fishing well for small brown and rainbow trout, which haven’t been particularly fussy with soft plastics, small hard-bodied lures and flies all catching fish. Redfin perch have been in the deeper sections of the dams and soft plastics have worked well on them as well. Boats trolling in the Waroona and Harvey dams and Drakesbrook Weir have been catching brown and rainbow trout with Atomic Hardz Jerk Minnows accounting for quite a few fish. In the same area, the better redfin perch catches have come in periods of low light when the fish have come into the shallows. During the middle of the day they have remained in the deeper sections of the dams. In the Collie River rainbow and brown trout catches have been good, especially around the feeder creeks. Redfin catches have been reasonable in the Pemberton area, which was producing bigger brown trout. If you catch any great trout or redfin, make sure you message us a snap of the catch to our Instagram page @recfishwest
Mandurah and surrounds
You can tell by the smile that Tackle World Miami's Ash Ramm is pretty chuffed with this dhuie! With the demersal season open until midnight on October 8, Saturday is currently looking best for another send in the boats off Mandurah and Rockingham before the wind and swell spikes on Sunday and Monday. Wednesday could be another peachy day for a drop too.

Mandurah

Pink snapper have been abundant either side of Five-Fathom Bank and most boats that have anchored and used burley had no trouble getting a feed. Strong offshore currents have made inshore fishing a better option but a good dhufish was taken in the 70m depths out from Dawesville. Many anglers targeting pink snapper have been harassed by Samson fish, while tuna have been about in good numbers but few people are targeting them. The same goes for King George and sand whiting as most boaties have preferred to focus on demersal species, although both KG's and sand whiting still provide a delicious feed if you have no luck on the demersals. In the estuary, boats trolling small hard-bodied lures have been catching tailor up to 55cm and bull herring, while whiting have been taken from the estuary end of the Dawesville Cut, both from the rocks and off boats. The Cut held plenty of herring, as did the Mandurah traffic bridges, and juvenile salmon have started to show up at the Cut as well. Yellowfin whiting catches were good in the estuary on warmer days. On the beaches north and south of town the spring tailor run has been promising, with plenty of 35-40cm fish caught along with some bigger models. South of town around White Hills drone fishers have done well on pink snapper and mulloway. Saturday isn't looking too bad on the water, but Sunday to Tuesday will see the wind, rain and swell return. Make sure you pay a visit to the great crew from Tackle World Miami for the best tips and gear!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

With Cockburn and Warnbro Sound closed to pink snapper fishing, boaties have instead headed out to Five-Fathom Bank and at the back of Garden Island where they have done well in a range of depths from 30m to 90m. Dhufish catches out that way have been very good too, with a couple of fish around the 18kg mark taken in 40-50m depths and decent breaksea cod among the bycatch. A few tuna have been in these depths as well. Dirty water in Cockburn Sound hasn’t made the squid any less aggressive and they have been caught pretty much everywhere. Where there has been broken ground, King George whiting catches have also added to the bag. Mangles Bay fished well for sand and King George whiting and also squid. Kayak fishers fishing near the old power station in Coogee did reasonably well on squid, with smaller squid jigs (2.5 size) in blue achieving good catches. Tomorrow is probably your best bet for a duck out in the boats given the rougher weather settles in between Sunday and Tuesday. As for land-based fishing, tailor up to 60cm have been taken on bait and lures at Secret Harbour and Port Kennedy beaches, which have also fished well for sand whiting and herring. Woodman Point fished very well and along with the usual fare of herring, chopper tailor and squid, chunky sand whiting between 30-35cm were added to the mix. The Ammo Jetty had similar species, while chopper tailor, herring and squid have come from Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties. Squid catches have been good from the rocks at Point Peron and at Long Point the odd flathead and flounder have begun to show up along with chopper tailor, herring and sand whiting. Big thanks to Compleat Angler Rockingham for their tips!
Perth catches
That's a cracker of an icebreaker to land your first fish since living in Australia! Seb Davis was fishing the Perth metro recently and handed the rod to his partner, before she hooked up to this solid tailor on a 7-inch Zman plastic. Setting high standards there! Photo credit: Tailor Fishing Western Australia Facebook Page

Boats

Boats that have stayed local have done well on demersal species but not so much on the dhufish, although a few have been taken out from Two Rocks and Hillarys. Pink snapper have been the main catch at the back of Three Mile Reef and in 50-80m depths on the northern side of Rottnest Island. The pinkies have been taken at anchor on unweighted mulies and also on the drift, with plenty of breaksea cod and a few skippy among the bycatch. Quite a few of the pinkies have been in the low 50cm range but bigger models in the high 70cm range have also come over the side. On the south side of Rottnest off Salmon Bay pink snapper, breaksea cod and baldchin groper have been in good numbers in 30m depths. Smaller Samson fish have been in high numbers around Rottnest, but a 20kg yellowtail kingfish was caught off Parker Point by a crew drifting for demersals. North of Windmills very big King George whiting, one measuring 62cm and another whopper at 71cm were taken by snapper chasers drifting big squid baits. Right on Windmills there have been smaller KG's, sand whiting and some big squid. Stragglers also held good numbers of King George whiting, sand whiting and squid on the weed beds but weighted jigs have been needed in the deeper water. Boats trolling lures such as Halco Laser Pros near the exposed reefs at Mewstones, Stragglers and Rowboat Reef have been doing well on tailor in the 38-45cm range, while chopper tailor have been caught in the Swan River around Crawley by anglers trolling whitebait gangs. Saturday should be bearable on the water with light to moderate south-westerly winds with a touch of rain but Sunday and Monday are looking a bit tedious. If you're ducking out for a bottom fish for demersals tomorrow, the northern side of Rotto should keep you nicely sheltered from the wind.

Shore-based

A pretty epic mulloway landed on 5lb line and 6lb leader intended for bream! Daniel Funston @dang_dangz took his time after hooking up to this fine specimen in the Swan River, a cracking catch on the lighter gear.

Bream fishing has been good in the Swan River with chunky fish of 30-40cm taking soft plastics and vibe lures, especially in darker colours. The better areas have been around Ascot and Garrett Road Bridge and night sessions have been more productive. Soapy mulloway have been among the bream. At the Narrows, mulloway around the 10-15kg mark have been smashing into schools of bony herring when they pass through. The Narrows also fished well for tailor as did the Canning River between Canning and Mt Henry bridges. The northern beaches have been producing pink snapper around the 55cm mark, mainly for drone fishers but big tailor have been taken north of Quinns on Dr Hook School Bully lures. North and South moles held plenty of herring and chopper tailor have been in good numbers at North Mole. Dirty water has slowed squid activity at both the moles. The reefs and rock walls around Swanbourne and Cottesloe have also held decent tailor, along with herring. Land-based conditions are a bit fiddly given it's mainly south-westerly winds this weekend but there are plenty of groynes and rockwalls where you can use the wind to your advantage. Remember, you are not allowed to fish for pink snapper between Cockburn and Warnbro Sound until April 1 off the boats to protect their spawning aggregations, you can see the closed map area here. You can however target them off the land in this area from February 1. Best of luck if you're heading out and big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Freo for their tips!
