Pic of the Week!

A few weeks ago it was a big dolphinfish being hooked off the Busso Jetty, now she's producing Spanish mackies! This solid fish was landed by @oskar._.sw this week and it goes to show the calibre of fishing available off this landmark!

Broome catches
A personal best barra for Jess! While the numbers were down for barra this week, those that were landed were quite big around the creeks so make sure you get out there when the weather is friendly! Image: @reefchiefaustralia

Boats

Fishing has been very quiet around town this week with both Dampier and Crab creeks pretty much shut down and yielding only a few mud crabs. The barra that were caught on occasions were quite big however On the bright side fishing has improved at the Fingers where threadfin salmon have been caught in reasonable numbers along with the odd small barramundi. Conditions are looking calm from today right through to Tuesday but stay safe and be wary of the lightning over your head. Fishing rods are good conductors of electricity unfortunately and none of us are Thor.

Shore-based

Shore fishers have fared a little better than their boating counterparts. Entrance Point has offered queenfish and trevally, while the Port Jetty produced golden trevally and queenfish on poppers, stickbaits and metal lures. Small queenfish and trevally have been caught at the Town Beach Jetty, while Willie Creek held mangrove jack and the odd small barramundi. In the Fitzroy River live baits have worked well on barramundi at Telegraph Pool and Langi Crossing.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
It's been a while since we've seen a swordfish in the report! This beauty was just one of three swords landed aboard @exmouth_fishing_adventures in just one day and they are widely considered the best tasting billfish.

Boats

Most fishing on the west side has been ruled out although a couple of bigger boats got out to the 200m depths and encountered a few black marlin. Closer in a few Spanish mackerel came from Helby Bank but they were on the smaller side. With northerly winds for most of the week the Muirons weren’t a viable option but the Gulf managed to save the day, although catches there were mainly dominated by queenfish along with school and shark mackerel. The same area was relatively quiet for bottom fish apart from a few Charlie Court and blue-lined emperor. The Bay of Rest has been producing decent mud crabs. This entire coming week is looking pretty gross with moderate south-westerly winds and 2m swells so try and find some shelter if ducking out.

Shore-based

The shoreline in Exmouth Gulf has been holding plenty of baitfish, mainly hardyheads, which have been attracting big numbers of small queenfish and trevally that were happy to smash surface lures. At Bundegi, the boat ramp has held plenty of good-sized whiting and garfish, while in the town marina mangrove jack averaging 40cm have been taking small pieces of mulie, while bream and cod have also been caught there in good numbers. Wapet Creek down to Learmonth Jetty also held plenty of decent whiting, while around the pylons at Learmonth Jetty mangrove jack and bream have been active. VLF Bay and Lighthouse Bay have been difficult to fish because of the wind. Late last week a bonefish was caught in the lagoon at Ningaloo. Given the forecast, finding sheltered spots and using the south-westerly winds to your casting advantage is your best bet this week.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Tuna have been caught offshore on both sides of town and the size has been good, but only a few Spanish mackerel have been landed. The pelagics in general have been widespread though, with fish hooked along the cliffs, south of town in 30m depths and further north at Sand Patch. Spanish mackerel were landed south of town. Early on Saturday and Sunday morning at this stage look the most comfortable for the boats but get back to shore before the wind kicks off from midday.

Shore-based

At Wittecarra and Red Bluff tailor sizes have declined but they have been about in reasonable numbers along with dart and decent whiting on the calmer mornings. The action from the cliffs has been slow with mainly small pink snapper and the odd decent tailor caught, but reports of better tailor have come from Oyster Reef where pink snapper have also been about. Big schools of mullet have been hanging around Lucky Bay and there have been reports of yellowtail kingfish and mulloway lurking nearby. In the Murchison River yellowfin whiting have been caught at the Sand Spit and mud crabs have been caught around the marina. The marina jetty produced bream as well and there have been a few big runs and break-offs at the jetty, attributed to mangrove jack or big cod. Both Saturday and Sunday morning at this stage look okay for land-based fishing conditions on the forecast.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches
@andosan72 was making his way up to Exmouth for GAMEX and decided to have a troll through the Abrolhos with some @richterlures Soft Grassy's, a good decision considering it scored him and his pal two kingies!

Boats

There has been very little action this week and almost no reports thanks to some pretty horrendous conditions. There hasn't been too much action on the pelagic front other than kingies doing the rounds throughout the Abrolhos, but if conditions improve dinghy fishers could head out chasing whiting or squid around Point Moore. There have been some reports of blue swimmer crabs on calm mornings in sheltered areas. It's looking like this weekend will thankfully hold a better weather window if you wish to duck out.

Shore-based

Weather and weed have spoiled most of the shore fishing this week. Tailor numbers, which had been spasmodic, have tapered right off and getting a feed of whiting has been very hard work. One option this weekend could be chasing bream in the Greenough River. Another good bet would be going for blue swimmer crabs, tarwhine and herring in the Batavia Coast Marina or down at Port Denison. Bream, tarwhine, whiting or herring could also be found around the Fishing Boat Harbour. You're in luck from the weather gods if you wanted a land-based flick this weekend so get out there.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
Great to see Garrit looking chuffed with a nice pinkie off Lancelin thanks to Peter Fullarton's Tailored Treks Tours! Image: nolangoesbeachfishing2.0

Boats

Small boats and kayaks have found the bays waters to be quite turbid, especially the south end which has made the fishing hard work. Thankfully it should clear throughout the weekend. Venturing just to the north or south of the bay in 5-6m depths to clearer waters has seen better fishing with sand whiting, tailor, tarwhine and some great blue spot flathead to 60cm. Small snapper have been in big numbers, so make sure you handle them with care and let them go. Big boats might find a run out to the FADs a chance on Sunday or Monday and a cruise along the White Bank trolling a mix of lures might see a few mackerel turning up. If you're thinking of ducking out in the boats this weekend, launch after midday on Saturday as the conditions are expected to become more friendly from then onwards.

Shore-based

Snapper have been great off the beach of late, so find a spot near reef and burley up for the best chances. Recent swell and wind has stirred up the water and north of town it’s been a green or muddy colour. While this is good for snapper, tailor have moved offshore but the conditions should rapidly improve throughout the weekend with strong easterly winds flattening the seas and swell. The evenings have seen small whaler sharks and solid guitar fish. The jetty produced some tailor at sunset and the herring were biting throughout the night. Midday on Saturday onwards looks decent for a land-based flick.

A big Recfishwest thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches
Oli Stevenson @olistevensonn from Southern Sports & Tackle couldn't resist getting into the awesome gummy shark action that has still been bubbling away this week. Most beaches around town have been producing them so make sure you get out there!

Boats

Big nannygai have been caught at Figure of Eight Island and at Leg of Lamb, while Mondrain Island and Douglas Patch held Samsonfish to 30kg. Out wide Humilaria Reef and Waterwitch have yielded breaksea cod to 2.5kg, while dhufish to 13kg have been caught at Baynes Reef. Cook Rocks and Esperance Bay have held good numbers of squid and small Samsonfish have been providing light-tackle fun for dinghy fishers in the bay. Plenty of snook and sand whiting have been caught at Wylie Bay, while thumping sand whiting have been landed in the 12m depths off Fourth Beach. The horrible easterly winds and storms will make an ugly return this coming week. Land-based fishing is the safest bet if you're brave enough to face it. Stick to the beaches though as it's much safer and you'll catch just as many fish.

Shore-based

The great gummy shark run continued this week with multiple fish being landed each night on small strips of mullet pinned to snelled 7/0 hooks. The better spots have been Whale Beach, Dunns Beach and Tagon Beach with the incoming tide producing the best results. Tailor to 3.5kg have been caught at Thomas River, while Dunns and Rossiter beaches have held good numbers of mulloway. Flathead, gummy sharks and big skippy have been landed at Stockyards. Salmon hotspots this week were 10-Mile Lagoon and Observatory Beach. Taylor Street Jetty offered King George whiting and herring after dark, while squid have been going off night and day at the Town Jetty in what has been one of the best summer squid runs in recent memory. Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has been holding good skippy, while many bream over 40cm have been caught in big numbers at Wheatfields and Woody lakes.

Click on the image below to hear from Recfishwest's Research & Development Lead Sam Bock discussing the Government's illogical decision to propose putting a no fishing/sanctuary zone all along the beaches and rocks at Thistle Cove and Hellfire Bay. Safe fishing infrastructure was implemented at this location over 15 years ago by dedicated local fishing club members, clearly demonstrating the importance of these spots for fishing.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
Nannies have been about in decent numbers this week off the south coast when the conditions allowed it, with @daniel.dimech.9 coming across this tasty critter.

Boats

There’s been very little to report this week despite reasonable conditions on some days. King George Sound has produced smallish squid and slightly better King George whiting and the Princess Royal and Oyster harbours have offered blue swimmer crabs at times for drop netters. The weather looks treacherous this coming week so land-based fishing is likely your best bet.

Shore-based

Cheynes Beach produced a few salmon, tarwhine and skippy, while Sand Patch offered salmon, herring and tarwhine. The town marina held herring and a few small skippy and the odd squid, while Emu Point produced herring, whiting, juvenile salmon and squid. At Frenchman Bay the odd blue swimmer crab has been scooped and a few King George whiting and squid have been landed there as well. Mulloway fishing has improved in the King and Kalgan rivers and bream catches have been reasonable. Beaches around Denmark have offered juvenile salmon and bull herring.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
Giant herring never fail to put on a show when you hook one and this 90cm jumbo took a live mullet flicked out by the guys from @leanbackfishing_. Great work fellas!

Boats

Squid catches have been good in 8-15m depths out from Peppermint Grove Beach down towards Busselton, with King George whiting and a few sand whiting being caught in similar depths. This stretch has also held a few blue swimmer crabs. A few tuna have been reported offshore either side of Bunbury, while at the FADs dolphinfish have been hanging about. Using burley closer in over broken ground has produced decent skippy and also attracted the odd Samsonfish. Crabbing was productive in Bunbury's Outer Harbour and so too was trolling for chopper tailor. King George whiting and squid have been in good numbers in Geographe Bay. At this stage it's looking better for a land-based fish this weekend given there are strong easterlies rolling in that will make it quite rough out on the water.

Shore-based

Busselton Jetty produced Spanish mackerel in the early mornings this week, while throughout the day squid and herring have been the main targets. At Dalyellup, small salmon have been caught along with tailor and herring, while at Forrest Beach a few blue swimmer crabs have been gloved by divers. In Bunbury, the Cut and Back Beach offered herring and chopper tailor, while the recent rain saw the Collie River fire up for bream and soapy mulloway. Yellowfin whiting catches have slowed in the estuary but scooping for blue swimmer crabs has been worthwhile. North of Bunbury the stretch from Preston Beach to Buffalo Beach produced good-sized tailor and mulloway. Along the shore at Geographe Bay yellowfin whiting have been caught in the mornings, especially around Elmore Road in Dunsborough.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

The red hot conditions finally backed off over the last week or so in the Pemberton region and as a result, it breathed new life into the trout action with this beautiful rainbow being landed by the skilled fishers from @_sffac_
Redfin perch have been getting ready to breed and have started to school up in Logue’s Brook Dam and Harvey Dam, where soft plastics and deep-diving lures have accounted for good numbers of modest-sized fish. Most of the sizes have been around 25-30cm, but occasionally bigger models will turn up. A few redfin have also been caught in the Collie River, while the stretch of the river from Honeymoon Pool back to the Wellington Dam wall has produced a few small rainbow trout and the odd bigger brown. Thanks to the cooler temperatures, streams with a bit of flow saw a good bump in trout catches in general, along with deeper sections in the shade of trees.

Mandurah and surrounds

Mandurah

Boats: With the current running in a northerly direction again offshore the FADs have fired back into action, bringing in plenty of dolphinfish. At the Five-Fathom Bank tuna have been in good numbers, while right on Five Fathom schools of chunky skippy have been attracted by burley trails. On offshore structure along the 40m line pockets of yellowtail kingfish have been encountered along with a few Samsonfish, while King George whiting have been active in 30m depths and sand whiting have been in good numbers inside the Five-Fathom Bank. Tailor and big herring have been rewarding boaties trolling in the estuary, while blue swimmer crabs have been about in big numbers for drop netters. Kayakers a few hundred metres offshore at Falcon and Melros beaches have been catching squid. Sunday arvo/evening looks calmest at this stage for boats and yaks.

Land-based: Beaches north and south of town have fired up for tailor and after dark mulloway have been about as well. In the daytime sheltered beaches such as Falcon and Seascapes have held sand and yellowfin whiting. Yellowfin whiting have thinned out a little in the estuary but they have been worth targeting, while the estuary’s drop-offs have offered herring and tailor. Scoopers have been getting their fair share of blue swimmer crabs, while bream and soapy mulloway have been widespread in the Murray and Serpentine rivers. The Dawesville Cut and the Mandurah traffic bridges have offered chopper tailor and herring, while on calmer days shore fishers have caught squid at Falcon and Melros beaches, mostly by casting out jigs under a float.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

The Rockingham FADs were firing for dollies this week! @nonstopfillets and @bunyipfishing had plenty of fun on the surface.

Boats: The FADs have been holding good numbers of dolphinfish in the early mornings and inshore waters have produced several Spanish mackerel this week. Bonito have also been about closer in and several have been taken by spearfishers in Cockburn Sound. Skippy have been on the Five-Fathom Bank and in Cockburn Sound and behind the Five-Fathom Bank tuna have been encountered. Good King George whiting catches have come from inside of Garden Island and at Mangles Bay and Parmelia Bank, often with sand whiting mixed in, while Warnbro Sound produced squid in 6-7m depths. In Safety Bay kayakers have been getting blue swimmer crabs. The exposed reefs at Mewstones fished very well for tailor, with unweighted mulies or surface lures accounting for fish in the 45-50cm range. Some pretty strong winds will stick around this weekend with a low swell but Sunday afternoon should be calmer.

Land-based: Bonito have been rewarding shore-based anglers this week with several landed at the Ammo Jetty and a few from the beach at Port Kennedy. However, the main shore catch this week has been tailor and they have been in good numbers from Secret Harbour right up to Kwinana Beach with the odd school mulloway landed as well. In Cockburn Sound snook have been mixed in with the tailor and most beaches have held sand whiting throughout the day. Near the grain terminal yellowfin whiting and the odd flathead have been landed. Long Point continued to fish very well and this week offered tailor, herring, whiting, flathead and flounder, and at times good numbers of dart have been smashing baits there. As well as bonito, scaly mackerel and herring were caught at the Ammo Jetty this week and Woodman Point held the same species. Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties have fished well for herring, whiting and chopper tailor and at Palm Beach a school of 60-70cm salmon turned up. Divers in Safety Bay have found a few blue swimmer crabs, while Point Peron has held a few squid.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches

Boats

The mornings have fished quite well for whiting this week with many crews dropping craypots then heading to the inside of Rottnest Island and doing well on King George and sand whiting in 9-20m depths. Most of the KG's have been around 40cm but some of the sand whiting have been well over 30cm. KG's and sandies have also been caught at Windmills and some other good sand whiting have been caught out towards the Gage Roads channel. At the Three-Mile Reef King George whiting have been kept company by decent skippy. Small King George whiting around 33-35cm have been caught inshore at Mindarie in 3-8m depths. The West End of Rottnest held a few yellowtail kingfish and the occasional Samsonfish, while at the FADs a wahoo was landed this week and dolphinfish have been active. Tuna numbers have dropped off out there, but good tuna catches have come from the waters off Mindarie. Squid have been quiet as well but those chasing sand whiting off Cottesloe and City Beach in 9m depths have been putting out old-fashioned baited squid spikes to add calamari to their whiting hauls. Blue swimmer crab numbers have tapered off a little in the Swan River but some good ones have been pulled up in 9-11m depths around Blackwall Reach and the old brewery. Chopper tailor fired up for those trolling in the river‘s lower and middle reaches but the sizes have been nothing special. There are some aggressive easterly winds roaring through this weekend but Sunday afternoon's forecast doesn't look too bad at this stage, just be wary that there may be a storm hanging overhead.

Shore-based

It's been another sensational week for mulloway catches in the Swan River, with this great catch popping up on the Swan River Mulloway Facebook Page. Give it a follow to stay up to date with the Metro mulloway action but most jetties between Maylands right up to the river mouth have been rewarding for those willing to put in the time and effort.

Bonito have been showing up at North Mole and at beaches around Coogee but they have often been just out of casting range. At North Mole anglers casting Nilsmaster lures at bonito have been bitten off by what they think were Spanish or shark mackerel.  North Mole fished well for herring when burley was used. Chopper tailor have also been active at North Mole at dawn and dusk.  Herring have been the mainstay at South Mole, while the rock walls further south and the Freo Fishing Boat Harbour have fished well for herring, flathead, juvenile snapper, whiting, flounder and tailor. Micro jigs have worked well on all these species. Good numbers of garfish were seen hanging about with the herring schools at Capo D’Orlando earlier this week which is a good sign for anglers with the ban on gardies being lifted on March 1st.  At Cottesloe beach fishers have been getting a handful of tailor in the evenings, while Floreat and City Beach have offered mainly herring and good numbers of whiting. Good tailor have been caught at Trigg and Hillarys, both inside and outside the marina, and from beaches north to Two Rocks. Reports of pink snapper have come from the northern rock walls. A big mulloway was finally pulled from E-Shed wharf this week and a few big mulloway have been landed around Blackwall Reach. The Swan River has been teeming with baitfish and in the unsettled and overcast conditions last weekend quite a few tailor up to 45cm were landed, often as a bycatch for flathead chasers fishing the drop-offs. Good tailor have also come from around Claremont, the Narrows and at Canning Bridge. Canning Bridge has also offered bream. Near the traffic bridges yellowfin whiting have been caught at night on live baits, while the deeper sections of the Swan River from East Fremantle up to Applecross have held a few flathead and flounder but not in the numbers present earlier this summer. Bream have been caught in good numbers in the upper reaches of the river with soft plastics and vibes proving effective on them. The better bream spots have been the Causeway, Ascot and Guildford. Soapy mulloway have been active up river as well with the Causeway, Belmont, Katanning Street in Bayswater and Garratt Road Bridge among the better spots. Bigger mulloway around 80cm have been reported from Canning Bridge and the Narrows. Scoopers have found it hard to get a feed of blue swimmer crabs in the river but divers have done all right around Claremont.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
