Ever think about a location to fish that you just find so fascinating? Personally, the Buccaneer Archipelago is just one of those places I'd die to fish and explore, especially when I see drone shots like this from Chris Cole.

Pic of the Week!

Anthony Axcell hit up one of the local north metro beaches, 2nd cast on a fresh herring fillet and BANG! Landed this Spanish mackie land-based on a 70lb mono snell rig. Extremely lucky to not get snipped off, nonetheless amazing achievement.

Broome catches
Mitch from Salty Sessions showing us what's up with this barramundi. Usually bounties are paid in gold but this time it looks like he's been paid in silver! 🤠

Boats

The creeks have been the main game this week with Dampier Creek fishing better than Crab Creek for barramundi, blue-nosed salmon and threadfin salmon. Both creeks have held reasonable numbers of mud crabs. It’s been quieter down at the Fingers and Roebuck Bay has offered little, but with good conditions forecast more opportunities in the bay should open up.

Shore-based

In the Fitzroy River good barramundi have been caught near the Cuttings with several landed in the high 80cm range and a couple of more than a metre. In town, Willie Creek has offered mangrove jack and the odd barramundi, Crab Creek has produced a few threadfin salmon and Barred Creek has held trevally and queenfish. The Town Beach Jetty has been fishing well for bream, queenfish and trevally, with a few barramundi landed there this week. The Port Jetty has offered trevally and queenfish while bluebone have been taking prawn baits there as well. Targeting barramundi around the pylons has also been worth a shot. At low tide, Entrance Point has offered trevally and queenfish for those willing to wade out.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
Big ol Salty horse aka Kyle Poole grabbing himself a bit of seafood speciality goldband. Feels good to catch a tasty fish like this!

Boats

Sailfish have been caught in good numbers on the west side with 80-100m depths producing well. Among the bycatch have been wahoo and the odd dolphinfish. Further out good numbers of blue marlin have been raised. Out west, spangled emperor, red emperor and Rankin cod have been caught in 30-70m. Spanish mackerel have been active along the close-in reefs, although around the Tantabiddi area they have been barely legal size. Off Jansz Beach dinghy fishers have done well on spangled emperor and mangrove jack. The Muirons have offered a few Spanish mackerel along with bluebone and spangled emperor. Cobia have been hanging around the shoals in Exmouth Gulf, along with blue-lined emperor, while the eastern side of the gulf has offered a few coral trout. School mackerel have been active between Learmonth and the light industrial area. Dinghy fishers cruising the shallow flats in the Bay of Rest have been spotting mud crabs, then diving in and picking them up. Getting a feed of squid in the Gulf, however, has been a bit harder as they have become scarce.

Shore-based

Big mangrove jack have taken up residence at Learmonth Jetty, but landing them hasn’t been easy and plenty of lines have been wrapped around the pylons. Live baits have guaranteed plenty of hook-ups on them. For easier fishing, the shallows around the jetty have offered whiting and bream and the end of the jetty has produced small queenfish at times. Near the Kailis factory whiting have been enthusiastically taking vibe and blade lures on the flats. Bundegi has been holding lots of baitfish but the few trevally that have been sighted among them have been finnicky with anglers doing better there on bream and mangrove jack. The odd bluebone has been cruising along the Town Marina rock walls, while inside the Marina mangrove jack, cod and bream have been the main suspects although at times small barracuda and queenfish have shown up. Small bream have been caught at the mouth of Wapet Creek, while flyfishers working the flats north of Wapet Creek have encountered permit. Just-size bluebone have been caught in VLF Bay while at the tip of the Cape, spangled emperor have been hitting stickbaits. Whiting and the odd spangled emperor have been caught by those willing to brave the wind at Tantabiddi.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches
Interesting looking "Spanish mackerel" there! Nicki Hunt has been on the pelagic pursuit chasing down bait balls and casting lures into them and managed to land this beaut broad bar Spanish mackerel!

Boats

Tuna have been the main catch for boaties with a couple of Spanish mackerel turning up on social media as well.  The 30m depths out from Jakes Point and the Sand Patch have been the better spots for both species. A few bonito have also been active. If the land-based fishing is anything to go by, tinny anglers can expect to find tailor, whiting and the odd mulloway along the stretches of the Murchison River up to the mouth.

Shore-based

A couple of anglers up from Perth have enjoyed great sessions on 50-60cm tailor at Back Beach this week with the big greenbacks taking poppers and garfish baits. Smaller tailor have come from the Murchison River mouth, while at Red Bluff and Wittecarra chopper tailor have been mixed in with dart. Cliff fishers around Goats Gulch have enjoyed good pink snapper action, landing several fish around the 80cm mark. Big schools of yellowfin whiting have been in the Murchison River and the Sand Spit has been a good place to fish for them. The Spit has also offered chopper tailor in the evenings and a couple anglers there reported losing fish after good runs which they believed to be mulloway. The Marina Jetty has offered bream and big cod and plenty of mud crabs have been caught in the river.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches

Boats

Crews that headed north out from Coronation Beach found bonito, tuna and a few schools of Spanish mackerel this week, while professional crayfishers commuting from the Abrolhos Islands have noticed tuna and Spanish mackerel schools near the Wallabi group. Around Dongara, dinghy anglers have encountered Spanish mackerel, while a few Samsonfish were landed. If the land-based fishing is anything to go by, there are plenty of chopper tailor and whiting hanging around the inshore spots for tinny and kayak fishers when the weather allows. If the land-based fishing is anything to go by, there are plenty of chopper tailor and whiting hanging around the inshore spots for tinny and kayak fishers when the weather allows.

Shore-based

There have been a few outstanding catches in an otherwise quiet week. At Coronation a drone fisher landed pink snapper, a baldchin groper and a decent coral trout, while at Greenough’s second point, two coral trout around the 4-5kg mark were landed on the cast. South of Dongara, a Spanish mackerel around 12kg was caught from the shore. Otherwise, weed has ruled out most beach fishing around town but the local rock walls have saved the day. The stones at Fishing Boat Harbour and on the north side of the Batavia Coast Marina have offered good numbers of pike in the 30-40cm range and swimming with them have been similar-sized tailor, although the choppers haven’t been taking baits and lures with the same gusto but most people have picked up two or three in a session. The same areas have offered good cod and some decent trevally, along with lots of small tarwhine which have been a nuisance. Plenty of people have been targeting blue swimmer crabs in the Fishing Boat Harbor and at Batavia Coast Marina but few decent catches have been reported, while north of Drummonds and likely around Shelter Bay and Morning Reef, whiting have been caught.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
When he's not getting bogged, he's bringing in the dogs. Austin Brightling has been on fire lately with the land-based action pulling out this solid pinkie.

Boats

With the demersal ban on, boats have been staying in close to shore. Trolling pilchards or small lures early morning allowed for some nice tailor around Horseshoe reef, while the sand patches in 6m depths have had some plump sand whiting and flathead caught. Within the bay we have seen a uptick in herring and squid numbers. Lobster pots have been catching good numbers of red’s under 10m depths.

Shore-based

The run of pink snapper off the cast has continued with fish around the 2-4kg being caught mostly early morning. Tailor fishers have been struggling to find the larger specimens with many fish in the 30’s range, it’s been worthwhile downsizing to 4/0 hooks as the herring are often as big as the tailor. the bycatches has been quite interesting with tarwhine, flathead, mackerel, guitar fish, mulloway and hammerhead sharks all surprising anglers this week.

A big Recfishwest thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Gido tells it how it is on the proposed South Coast Marine Parks

Check out this great vid by @Gido’s Fishing Adventures showcasing how great beach fishing is on the South Coast. As an avid South Coast angler, Gido has a few things to say about the proposed South Coast Marine Parks that are well worth listening to if you love your South Coast fishing like he does and we do! As is always the case, the whole vid is well worth a watch – but his views on the marine parks comes in at 17:45. Recfishwest will be working hard with the South Coast fishing community to ensure fishing access is kept to the all the spots that are important to fishers in the final marine park design.

If you want keep up to date with everything that is happening in this space, as well as get tips on giving your views to the Government on the proposals, sign up to our South Coast Marine Parks updates here

Esperance catches

Boats

Samsonfish up to 25kg have been caught at Hope Island, while Wilson Island has produced nannygai up to 3kg. At Observatory and Boxer islands queen snapper up to 7kg have been caught. Smaller boats have come across good numbers of harlequin fish and breaksea cod behind Cull Island, while tuna have been caught around Thomas and Gunton Islands. Big sand whiting and King George whiting have been caught at Wylie Bay, while Lovers Cove has yielded good King George whiting as well. Squid catches have been good from inside of Flat Rocks and plenty of herring and snook have been caught in Esperance Bay.

Shore-based

Thomas River has fished well for gummy sharks and mulloway, while gummy sharks up to 20kg have been caught at Poison Creek. Schools of salmon have been active at Tagon Beach. Stockyards has offered mulloway, gummy sharks and big salmon. Skippy up to 3kg and salmon have been caught at 10-Mile Lagoon, while Roses Beach has produced mulloway up to a metre. Big squid have been caught from the Town Jetty, and Taylor Street Jetty has held big King George whiting and garfish have been active along the town foreshore at night. Good flathead and flounder have been caught in Bandy Creek Boat Harbour, while Woody Lake and Stokes Inlet have offered good-sized bream in the afternoons.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
What good is a king without a queen? Daniel Dimech managed to land this queen snapper while jigging on his Pe2 outfit.

Boats

A good weather window opened up late last week and crews that headed to the coral ground found dhufish, queen snapper and pink snapper in good numbers, while boats fishing around the islands came across tuna. In King George Sound King George whiting have been in good numbers and the sizes have been good also, with most of the fish caught above 40cm. Squid have also been caught in the Sound in reasonable numbers and herring have been plentiful as well.

Shore-based

Salmon have continued to pop up at various locations either side of town. The most consistent spot has been the Sand Patch where big schools of 2kg fish seem to have taken up residence there. Sand Patch has also held good numbers of big tarwhine. Good salmon catches were also reported this week at Salmon Holes, a few have been caught at Cable Beach and Bremer Bay has held plenty as well. A big school of salmon was also reported at Lights Beach in Denmark. Either side of town, decent skippy and just-size pink snapper have been caught. The Town Marina has held its usual trifecta of herring, skippy and squid, while squid and whiting have been the main catches at Emu Point.  Frenchman Bay has produced good squid and the odd King George whiting, while Princess Royal Harbour has been holding huge schools of garfish that have fired up once a bit of burley is thrown in. A lot of people have been scooping for blue swimmer crabs in Princess Royal Harbour as well and they have found big numbers but most of them undersize, although the ones that have been legal have been well oversize. Bream and small mulloway have been haunting the King and Kalgan rivers but they have been hard to tempt at times.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches

Boats

The offshore fishing has been very quiet with few boats getting out to the FADs and the big numbers of tuna fading.  Out in the 20-30m depths gummy sharks have been targeted and some good ones have come over the side.  Geographe Bay has fished well for King George whiting, herring and squid, while dinghy fishers trolling the Lechenault Inlet have managed reasonable hauls of chopper tailor. Drop netting for blue swimmer crabs around Bunbury’s outer harbour was reasonably productive and the mouth of the Blackwood River has offered good sized crabs as well. Kayak fishers out from Dalyellup have done well on squid and herring.

Shore-based

Mixed reports of mulloway catches have come from beaches north of Bunbury with several big fish landed. The more consistent beaches have been Preston and Myalup. At Preston a few just-size pink snapper have been caught by drone fishers, while this stretch of beach down to Bunbury has offered herring, juvenile salmon and whiting during the day. Tailor fishing has been poor in the past week with only a handful of fish being landed. Closer to town the best bet has been the Bunbury Cut which has offered herring, chopper tailor and plenty of small tarwhine. A few nice school mulloway have come from the Collie River but bream activity has been slow. Yellowfin whiting catches have tapered off on the estuary flats but they have still been worth targeting, while around Australind scoopers have fared best chasing blue swimmer crabs at night.  South of town Dalyellup has fished well for herring, a few chopper tailor and salmon trout, while Forrest Beach has offered herring and whiting. Drone fishers have done well on snapper around Quindalup, while at Yeagarup big schools of salmon have been holed up. The Busselton Jetty has fished well for squid and good numbers of herring have been hanging about. A morning flick along most of the beaches between Busselton and Dunsborough has usually produced yellowfin whiting and herring. A few soapy mulloway have been among the herring in Dunsborough.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

Ash, the keen and knowledgeable freshwater fishing young gun at Whitey’s Tackle, has been targeting the back end of Harvey Dam and doing well on redfin perch. He also has found trolling in the dam to be productive for rainbow trout. The deeper pockets of Wellington Dam have also offered decent redfin perch, while the Blackwood River around Bridgetown surprised this week with good numbers of redfin as well. Big redfin have also been active around Pemberton and brown trout catches there have picked up as well.
Mandurah and surrounds
You've heard of Recfishwest, now get ready for "Rec Flick West" 🎣  Young gun from Flick West Fishing has finally landed the elusive mulloway, going at a solid 117cm. Bit of fresh tailor, countless hours and long nights did the trick! Great effort, mate.

Mandurah

Boats: It’s been quieter than usual this past week with action at the FADs tapering off, however a few tuna have been hanging about and have been active at times and while lots of dolphinfish have been sighted they have been skittish and reluctant to bite. At the back of the Five-Fathom Bank tuna have been more aggressive and Samsonfish have been caught by those sending out a burley trail. Burley has also led to decent skippy catches right on the Five, while inside of it a good feed of sand whiting has been fairly easy to come by. For King George whiting, the 30m depths off Dawesville have produced a few. Blue swimmer crabs have been the most reliable species to target in the estuary with many crews getting their bag limits with ease. Tailor catches in the estuary have slowed but they have been worthwhile chasing. Decent herring have often been among the tailor bycatch.

Land-based: A few just-sized pink snapper have been landed from the rocks and the Dawesville Cut has offered herring and the odd tailor, as have the Mandurah traffic bridges. The better fishing has been from the beaches, with White Hills, Tim‘s Thicket, Silver Sands and San Remo  producing good numbers of chopper tailor with a few school mulloway thrown in. In the estuary, scooping for blue swimmer crabs has been very productive. Yellowfin whiting catches in the estuary have tapered off both in size and numbers and they have shown little interest in either surface lure or vibes. Flounder and herring have been the consolation prizes for whiting chasers doing it tough. In the Serpentine and Murray rivers bream and soapy mulloway have been worth targeting.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Those who got out to the southern FADs found little action apart from schools of small tuna. Dolphinfish were spotted there but they were very skittish and not feeding. Good skippy have been caught on broken ground around Garden Island along with King George whiting, while at the back of Garden Island Samsonfish have been active. The deeper waters inside of Garden Island have been the best for squid with 10m proving a sweet spot. Heavier, fast-sinking Duo squid jigs have been working well on them in these depths. At Stragglers and Mewstones good tailor have been caught around the exposed reefs. One angler chasing a feed of sand whiting out that way noticed seabirds working a bust-up and happened to have a Halco Twisty in his tackle box which produced a hot session on 40-60cm tailor. Sand whiting catches have been good and widespread. Mangles Bay, Safety Bay Parmelia Bank and the edge of the shipping channel have been among the better spots. Kayak and dinghy fishers have been picking up blue swimmer crabs in Shoalwater Bay

Land-based: The Ammo Jetty has been producing the odd bonito along with a few herring and squid, while herring and small tailor have been caught at Woodman Point.  The beaches are still fishing well for tailor around the 35cm mark, with the odd 50cm-plus fish thrown in. Anywhere from Secret Harbour up to Challenger Beach has produced good results at dawn and dusk, while a few herring and sand whiting have been around in the daytime. Mulloway have also been about with plenty of school-sized fish being caught by tailor chasers and some 15kg-plus models also landed.  Secret Harbour and Golden Bay have held some of the bigger mulloway. Long Point is still fishing well for tailor, herring and flathead, while the Penguin Island sand spit has offered flathead, flounder sand whiting and yellowfin whiting.  A big mulloway was landed at Rockingham Jetty late last week and along with Palm Beach Jetty it has been producing small tailor, herring and squid. In Safety Bay those swimming out with a mask and snorkel have been picking up good numbers of blue swimmer crabs.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
The taxman has fused with the mackerel and now we have shark mackerel hitting the metro waters in force. Bit of good fun for Glen Chandler chucking stickbaits for these fellas.

Boats

Tuna have been in reasonable numbers offshore and the West End of Rottnest has offered yellowtail kingfish, skippy and Samsonfish when burley has been used. Rottnest has also held good King George whiting and smaller KGs and sand whiting have been caught at the Windmills. The 10-15m depths off Cottesloe and City Beach have also produced good numbers of sand whiting and the exposed reefs around Carnac Island have offered decent tailor. Squid have favoured greater depths this week and 8-12m out from South Fremantle has been producing. Yellowtail kingfish have also been caught off Ocean Reef. Chopper tailor have been caught when trolling in the Swan River and the Swan’s deeper sections have been worth a crack for blue swimmer crabs. A couple of big mulloway have come from Mosman Bay and Blackwall Reach at night.

Shore-based

The Swan River has been fishing well for tailor with good fish being caught from the Fremantle bridges all the way up to the Narrows. Chopper tailor have also been among the bycatch for flathead and flounder chasers in the middle to lower reaches of the Swan who have found flatfish numbers to be tapering off.  The better chopper tailor locations have been the Narrows, Point Walter, Claremont and Canning Bridge. Plenty of small tarwhine have been hitting baits and lures in the Swan as well, while in the lower reaches warm, still nights have produced good numbers of yellowfin whiting on live baits or fresh prawns. Speaking of prawns plenty of dab nets have been sold in recent weeks and people have been scooping prawns from the river walls from Fremantle to as far up as the Narrows with king prawns mixed in with the school prawns. Despite Fremantle Harbour being full of scaly mackerel no decent land-based mulloway catches have been reported in the Swan, apart from a 10kg model caught at Claremont Jetty late last week. Soapies and school mulloway have been caught as far up as Guildford by bream fishers who are also landing the odd up river flathead. Most of the regular bream locations with structure in the Swan and Canning rivers have fired, with better spots including the Causeway, Canning and Mt Henry bridges, Sandy Beach Reserve, Maylands, Garratt Road Bridge and Fishmarket Square. Mullet cubes have proven to be one of the better baits for bream. Oceanside, North and South moles have been quiet with just the odd herring and small tailor caught but the beaches have fished well for chopper tailor in the mornings. Around Floreat and City Beach tailor have been mixed in with decent skippy and good-sized herring and small tarwhine and bigger tailor have been caught in reefy areas around Cottesloe in the evenings. From Scarborough up to Trigg tailor and soapy mulloway have been caught while good tailor have come from the northern rock walls, with Ocean Reef one of the better spots. Drone fishers on northern beaches have done okay on pink snapper at night. The rock walls and beaches south of Fremantle have fished well for chopper tailor, herring and garfish when burley has been used.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
