CHASING SALMON OVER EASTER? CHECK OUT OUR SAFE FISHING TIPS!
With salmon running red hot off our southern and South-West coastline at the moment, remember to stick to the sand as this is much safer and you'll catch just as many fish this way. Click on the image above to watch our short video containing tips on safe fishing!

With a big surge of fishers expected to chase salmon schools off the southern and South-West coastlines over this Easter break, it's important to put safety first.

You'll catch just as many salmon off WA's beautiful beaches, but if you choose to fish off the rocks, remember to analyse conditions on arrival, fish with a friend, wear the correct footwear and always wear a lifejacket.

Don't have a lifejacket? Numerous tackle stores will happily loan you a FREE lifejacket to use on your fishing trips - check out where by clicking here: bit.ly/3ZBWFd8

Also keep a look out for weather alerts from the Bureau of Meteorology on our socials, so you're always one step ahead of the conditions 🌊

Broome catches
With decent weather windows opening up this week, Harry Holland managed to duck out from Broome and battled with this beefcake of a cod. This great snap was courtesy of @broome_fishing_club and while this cod was just under the metre mark, make sure any malabar or estuary cod over one metre are released. Check the Recfishwest app for fish ID's and rules!

Boats

Barramundi and a few threadfin salmon have been active in Dampier and Crab Creeks with good catches achieved on trolled hard-bodied lures, vibes and live baits. Some big queenfish have been landed at Dampier Creek and trevally have been around the entrances of both creeks. Blue-nosed salmon catches have also started to improve in the creeks. Down at the Fingers good threadfin salmon have been landed along with the odd barramundi. In Roebuck Bay decent-sized northern mulloway have come from the 30m depths and a few fingermark have been among them, while around the moorings tripletail catches have been reported. The south-westerly winds will pick up to moderate levels over this weekend along with a slight increase in the swell, but it should still be good enough to punch out. Monday onwards is looking calmer.

Shore-based

The Port Jetty fished well for queenfish and trevally, while barramundi in the 60-70cm range have been pulled from the pylons at night. Nearby at Entrance Point, wading out at low tide has been productive for queenfish and trevally. At the Town Beach Jetty the usual bream and javelinfish catches have been bolstered by trevally and queenfish, while whiting catches have improved in sizes and numbers at Town Beach. Creeks around town have been difficult to access, but Dampier Creek held threadfin salmon, queenfish and barramundi. Barramundi fishing has been best in the Fitzroy River with live baits having the edge on lures. The Fitzroy has also held threadfin salmon in pretty good numbers.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
A shout out to the fishers in Karratha this week, with birthday boy Zac Mc‘Luck’lan managing to catch this ripper 73cm fish to break his coral trout curse! It was a beauty, but it was also short lived as he was quickly outfished by his partner who got an even bigger one! Maybe next time Zac 😉.

Boats

The west side continued to fish well for billfish with black marlin dominating the catches. They have been relatively close in, with the 50-100m depths around Helby Bank producing the best results. Sailifish and a few striped marlin have been among the blacks, along with the odd wahoo, some big tuna and plenty of dolphinfish. Those bottom-bouncing in the deeper depths have also done very well on goldband snapper and ruby snapper, although sharks have been a problem at times so it pays to move around even if you're catching fish. Rankin cod catches out west have been good in 20m depths, while inshore waters at Tantabiddi have produced big numbers of spangled emperor with some cracking sizes reported. The Muirons have also fished well for Spanish mackerel, coral trout and Rankin cod, while near the tip of the Cape around Exmouth Reef was a hotspot for coral trout and golden trevally. Choppy and dirty water in the Gulf made fishing challenging at times but coral trout, spangled emperor and trevally catches have been fruitful with King Reef the hotspot. School mackerel have been around the shoals but Spanish mackerel have been scarce there. While the wind is favourable over the coming week, the swell is a little higher than usual and will sit at over two metres across this weekend and into Monday, which might make the drift or underwater currents faster than usual.

This angler aboard the @onstrikecharters vessel off Exmouth was very lucky that the mono leader didn't end up clashing with those razor sharp Spanish mackerel teeth otherwise this battle would've been over very quickly!

Shore-based

Learmonth Jetty has fished well for mangrove jack and golden trevally, while whiting have been caught on the flats. Even better whiting catches have come from Exmouth Station where the numbers and sizes took a good bump. Meanwhile, Tantabiddi and the beaches all the way to the tip of the Cape have been going off for spangled emperor with plenty of good fish hitting the sand. Many were taken on squid baits but stickabits or plastics are also work a crack. Tantabiddi has also produced whiting with small surface lures and squid baits accounting for most fish. At Mildura Wreck the odd bluebone has been among the spangled emperor schools. In the town marina, bream, small cod, trevally and mangrove jack have been the main catches. Wapet Creek should be worth a crack for bream and mangrove jack over the coming days, while the mouth of the creek often produces good whiting.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches

Boats

Conditions offshore have been glorious but the cooler water temperatures seem to have shut down pelagic species. Boats have been covering a lot of territory looking for warmer water but have had little to show for their efforts except for a few tuna. Despite the minimal results on the pelagic front, Red Bluff Spanish mackerel have been seen jumping and occasionally smashed deeper diving lures on the troll. Saturday morning looks like it will hold the best boating weather this week with calm winds generally coming from the east until the southerly arrives around 2:00pm. Sunday onwards is looking choppy. Make the most of it considering the demersal season has just reopened!

Shore-based

The cliffs continued to produce good numbers of pink snapper in the 50-60cm range, while down at Lucky Bay the mulloway action has been red hot with fish up to 20kg landed. At Wittecarra a mulloway of around 18kg hit the sand and the beach has also held decent tailor, a few dart and 30cm-plus herring. Good whiting have been caught at Wittecarra and Red Bluff as well. The water in the Murchison River is very clear and the system offered a wide range of quality species this week. The Sand Spit fished well for school-sized mulloway and yellowfin whiting, while also producing chopper tailor to 40cm in the evenings. Even better yellowfin whiting have come from the flats on the other side of the river. The marina jetty has offered chopper tailor and mulloway as well, while blue swimmer and mud crabs have been caught in great numbers throughout the system. From the jetty up river decent numbers of bream and cod have been found. Cod are generally caught on the same rigs used to target bream, although it is sometimes wise to go up to a larger and stronger hook as they have huge mouths. Favoured baits for cod are prawn and strip baits while they have also shown an interest in soft plastics bounced along the bottom. Saturday morning should hold decent land-based fishing conditions.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches

Boats

There’s been very little action offshore due to the elements providing a major barrier but dinghy fishers have been doing well on squid from the north side of the Batavia Coast Marina and towards Pages Beach, as well as in Greys Bay. It's not looking ideal for the boats from Saturday onwards with big swell and southerly winds rolling in. Thankfully it might calm right down from Tuesday.

Shore-based

It’s been a case of quality over quantity this week with a couple of excellent catches achieved over a wide area despite a strong surge and dirty water this week. The full moon certainly fired up mulloway, with good fish landed in the 10-15kg range in the Drummond and Coronation area. Down towards Dongara chopper tailor from just size to 45cm have been landed along with a few pike and some decent mulloway. Back in town, the groynes near the harbour fished well for herring at times. In the Fishing Boat Harbour and at the Lives a lot of pike, a few reasonable tailor and the odd herring have also been reported.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
David Hankin managed to duck out to one of the Lancelin FADs with his pal Gavin, who managed to spear his first ever wahoo before it gave him a good underwater tow! Nice work Gav!

Boats

The weather has been sensational in the lead up to Easter for those lucky enough to get out mid-week. Offshore there plenty of bonito and random schools of tuna about. The 20m depths were good for a feed of sand whiting and skippy were schooling along the inshore reefs. Inside the bay there reports of plenty of herring, snook and skippy and some fantastic catches of squid. Despite the full moon and calm seas, lobster pots have been holding good numbers. There is an expected rush of boats heading west on the Easter weekend which coincides with the reopening of the demersal season. The forecast shows an increase in swell and afternoon sea breezes will make the beach launches tricky, especially for holiday makers accustomed to concrete ramps. If you do wish to duck out in the boat this Easter long weekend, aim to do so from early Saturday morning until about 11:00am as this is the sweet spot before it turns rough and windy.

Shore-based

The tailor are starting to creep up in sizes off the beaches! Peter Fullarton switched over to the 160mm CiD Shiverstick and it produced this solid 60cm specimen. This lure is usually more suitable for Spanish mackerel but it's a good way of enticing the larger tailor for a strike!

The beaches have been alive with herring this past week and 30cm+ sizes have been a common occurrence, which has made it the best run for some years. Fishers have had a great fun casting lures for the little scrappers on light gear. There is also some big tailor along the gutters and reef breaks, with a lot around that 50cm mark turning up this week. Remember that you are only allowed to take two tailor over 50cm. Saturday's swell of 2.3m will likely have snapper feeding within casting range for a few days and with lower winds expected on Saturday morning that might be your best land-based window this long weekend, although Monday and Tuesday morning might also be a good option given the easterly wind.

A big Recfishwest thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches

Boats

Samsonfish to 25kg have been caught at Charley and Cull islands, while nannygai to 60cm have been on the chew at Figure of Eight Island and Baynes Reef. Queen snapper to 8kg have come over the side at Black Island, blue groper have been landed at Rabbit Island and good numbers of nannygai and breaksea cod have been caught at Dart Reefs. Closer in, good King George whiting have come from Wylie Bay and Lovers Cove, while squid have been thick in 15m depths at Cook Rocks. Big snook have been landed at Observatory Island, while squid and herring have been plentiful in Esperance Bay. The weather gods have provided the goods this weekend for the boats with Saturday in particular looking glorious at this stage on the forecast, get out there!

Shore-based

Flathead to 2kg have been landed at Thomas River, while big salmon schools have been hanging around Tagon Beach. Good numbers of gummy sharks and mulloway have been landed at Kennedy Beach. At Dunns Beach, mulloway, gummy sharks and salmon have been in solid numbers. Big schools of salmon have also been holed up at Roses Beach and 10-Mile Lagoon. In town, the foreshore has held King George whiting up to 45cm, while skippy and garfish have been caught at night from Taylor Street Jetty. Esperance’s stellar summer squid season (considered by many as the town’s best ever) has showed no signs of slowing down and the Town Jetty has been the hotspot. Bandy Creek Boat Harbour has offered flathead, flounder and small King George whiting, while at Windabout Lake bream around the 40cm mark have been caught on shallow-running hard-bodied lures and salted mulie baits. Take advantage of the great weather this weekend for a land-based flick!

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
Our fishing report contributor and Recfishwest Research and Development Lead Sam Bock had no trouble finding some chunky salmon off our south coast over the weekend and there have been enormous schools reported cruising from around Albany right around to Bunker Bay, with that action tipped to spice up in our South-West even more over the coming weeks. Make sure you keep to the sand though, it's always a safer option than the rocks and produces just as many fish.

Boats

With glamour conditions this week many boats headed to the coral ground where catches of dhufish, pink snapper, harlequin fish and breaksea cod were widespread. Out deeper crews found nannygai and a few hapuka. Conditions in King George Sound have been ideal too with squid and King George whiting the main quarry and taken in good numbers, while anglers trolling near the islands have tangled with salmon and tuna. Saturday is looking tremendous for the boats. Best of luck if you wish to duck out and the calmer conditions should make it easier to spot salmon schools close to shore.

Shore-based

Herring have been in plague proportions around town which has locals excited as they expect the major salmon will not be far behind, with herring being their staple food source. Salmon have already been caught in twos and threes at a range of spots either side of town, with some of the better locations including Cheynes Beach, Sand Patch, Lowlands and Two Peoples Bay, along with Shelley Beach near Denmark.  Even tailor, a species that is usually rare in Great Southern waters have often been swimming with the salmon schools. Closer to town bread and butter species have been the main fare. The town marina offered herring and a few skippy, while Frenchman Bay produced herring and small King George whiting. Squid have been at both these locations but warmer water temperatures have made them less active than usual. Emu Point held squid, herring, whiting and skippy and in recent weeks has yielded Samsonfish and pink snapper in big sizes, so it is always worth setting out a big rod there. Gull Rock is another location that has produced good mixed bags of late, with catches including juvenile salmon, herring, snook, flathead and whiting. Bream and mulloway activity in the King and Kalgan River was slow this week, but near the river mouth juvenile salmon and herring have been caught. Saturday looks great for a land-based flick although expect Sunday to revert back to windy and choppy.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
Mitchell Cooper @mitchcooper_fishing1885 has been lapping up the fishing in our South-West over the past few weeks and has landed some mighty fish, with this pink snapper turning up one evening this week after soaking a bait in a gutter. Make sure you ask Coops for tips when you venture into Whitey's Tackle and Camping in Australind

Boats

It’s been pretty slow boat-wise with King George whiting and squid the main species targeted, predominantly in Geographe Bay and off Bunbury. In Bunbury waters crews have been cagey about King George locations but the best advice has been to look for broken ground on the edge of weed beds. In the sand holes closer in good sand whiting have been encountered. Bunbury fishers have also got amongst tuna, mainly by looking for working birds and surface bust-ups. The 12-16m depths have been a good starting point and the odd Samsonfish has shown up as well, although they have been in better numbers off Dunsborough and off Cape Naturaliste. In the estuary, dinghy fishers have been doing well on tailor up to 45cm, while dropping nets for blue swimmer crabs in Bunbury Harbour has been worth a crack despite having to work a bit harder. Kayak fishers in Geographe Bay have been getting good numbers of squid in 5-10m depths. Saturday morning until about 1:30pm looks like it should hold the best window for the boats before the southerly winds roll through from Sunday to Tuesday.

Shore-based

Yellowfin whiting have still been worth chasing in the Leschenault estuary although lures are recommended because blowfish numbers have picked up. Scooping for blue swimmer crabs in the estuary has become a bit harder, but is still worth a crack, especially in the early mornings and in the evenings, while bream activity is expected to pick up in the Collie River. Beaches north of town, especially Preston, have fished well for tailor and herring, while drone fishers there have been landing pink snapper. Bunbury beaches have offered tailor and herring, while the Bunbury Cut has held the same species along with the odd juvenile salmon. Snorkellers using gloves have been picking up blue swimmer crabs at Forrest and Peppermint Grove beaches. Busselton Jetty has offered mainly herring and squid, but tuna and Samsonfish are also a chance in the deep water at the end. Herring and whiting are in good numbers along the Geographe Bay shoreline, while salmon catches have been reported at Bunker and Eagle Bay. There have been widespread reports of big salmon schools cruising around these areas as well, so make sure you keep the sand between your toes if you're chasing these fish around the South-West.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

Redfin perch numbers have been good in both the Collie and Capel rivers. Most of the fish are in the 20cm range, but a few fat 40cm-plus models have been pulled from the deep pools and snags. Trout fishing in general over the past few weeks however has been much quieter, with many anglers waiting for water levels to rise. Once the rains start to roll in, the rapids will improve along with the water levels and this should drop the water temperatures and fire the trout up. At Harvey Dam redfin catches have been good, especially in the deeper sections around structure with soft plastics working well, while trout chasers have found a few small rainbows at first and last light.
Mandurah and surrounds
Mandurah seemed to be the place to be for solid King George whiting this week, with 50cm+ fish a common occurrence across the patchy weed and sand grounds not far offshore. Small strips of fresh squid tentacles always work best. Pic courtesy of Tackle World Miami

Mandurah

Boats: Poor water clarity has slowed the action at the FADs, but offshore in the 30m depths big schools of tuna have been hitting trolled skirts such as Richter Hockzhead lures with gusto. A few yellowtail kingfish have popped up there as well, while early in the morning similar depths out from Dawesville have produced solid King George whiting. Skippy catches have been good on Five-Fathom Bank, while inside the Five chunky sand whiting have been on the chew. The weed banks just out from the Heads have fished well for squid. Trolling for chopper tailor in the estuary has been productive, while those chasing a feed of blue swimmer crabs have found it hard work, especially deep in the estuary. Dropping nets near the ocean entrances has reportedly been more productive. The best window this weekend will be from early on Saturday morning until around midday but outside of that it is expected to be windy and choppy unfortunately.

Land-based: Beaches either side of town have fished well for chopper tailor and herring, with the bigger fish coming from the more reefy or exposed beaches such as White Hills and San Remo. Pink snapper chasers have landed fish at White Hills and Tim’s Thicket, while good yellowfin whiting and sand whiting have been active from Halls Head to Silver Sands. In the estuary, those walking out to the drop-offs have been catching chopper tailor, skippy, herring and juvenile salmon, while yellowfin whiting chasers have done best when casting lures at high tide despite the catches being patchy. The Mandurah traffic bridges and the Dawesville Cut have fished well for tailor and herring, while garfish have been taken from the Cut when the current has slowed down. Scoop netters have been struggling to get a feed a blue swimmer crabs, but if you sink a few hours into it you'll generally come home with a couple.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: When accessible the FADs have continued to fire and they produced plenty of dolphinfish and tuna this week. At the Five Fathom Bank skippy and King George whiting catches have been impressive, while the exposed reefs around Mewstones and Stragglers offered decent tailor and a few Samsonfish. Some very big mulloway have been caught in Cockburn Sound, including a 1.4m monster taken near Rockingham. A big school of salmon was also reported in the Sound, but so far there has been no news of catches. Garden Island, Mangles Bay and Parmelia Bank have been fishing well for squid, modest-sized King George whiting and sand whiting. Squid fishing has started to pick up in shallower waters with 5m depths an ideal starting point. Warnbro Sound has been producing good mixed bags including King George and sand whiting, herring, skippy, flathead and squid. Thankfully the next few mornings including today should all hold decent boating windows but aim to get in before that midday sea breeze kicks in.

Land-based: The Ammo Jetty fished well for soapy mulloway, chopper tailor and big scaly mackerel with the same species being caught at Woodman Point. The jetty has also fished well for bonito. Beach fishing has been rewarding in the mornings and evenings from Secret Harbour all the way up to Challenger Beach, with decent chopper tailor and school mulloway dominating catches. Long Point offered plenty of variety with good catches of tailor, herring, skippy, flathead, flounder and whiting. A dart of around 50cm was also landed there this week. The Pond at Safety Bay has been a good spot for chunky skippy, while Rockingham and Palm Beach jetties have been hit and miss but on good days produced stacks of herring. A school of small resident salmon was also spotted within casting range at the Palm Beach Jetty. The Penguin Island spit offered flathead and King George and sand whiting. Land-based squidding has picked up at Point Peron.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
Brace yourself for a double up of Metro mulloway mayhem. Up first we have Dwayne from @nonstopfillets who managed to land this beauty of a silver slab on a 1-2kg Insalt Finesse Explorer rod in Cockburn Sound!

Boats

Rottnest has been reliable for King George whiting and its West End has produced small tuna, yellowtail kingfish and Samsonfish. A big school of salmon was spotted near Rottnest, but there have been no reports of catches. King George whiting have also been caught at the Three Mile Reef and Mindarie saw a few Samsonfish landed. Mindarie’s inshore waters have also offered good squid. Windmills has been holding King George and sand whiting and the odd squid. The 10-15m depths off City Beach produced plenty of sand whiting as did the edges of the shipping channel, where some stonker mulloway up to 1.4m have been landed. Kayak fishers off South Fremantle have found squid in 8-10m depths. In the Swan River trolling for chopper tailor has been productive in the lower reaches and the river is still producing big crabs generally in deep water locations such as Blackwall Reach, Claremont, Mosman Bay and Deepwater Point, but also well into the Canning River, around the Causeway and out from Elizabeth Quay. You always hope that every day of a long Easter weekend provides the luck on the weather and while Friday is looking great for the boats, the only two other relatively good looking windows over the coming days at this stage might be very early on Saturday and potentially around midday on Monday.

Don’t forget - Perth Game Fishing Club's Jurien Bay WA Open is fast approaching and kicks off next weekend from 5-7 April! There's some great prizes up for grabs and plenty of boats have already entered to have a crack. Visit the Perth Game Fishing Club website for more details and to register!

Shore-based

...And here we have Jake Torre @jaketorre05 who sunk a few hours into soaking a bait around the Narrows Bridge which resulted in this 1.2m whopper. If this great fish was landed on a mullet bait by the man with the mighty mullet then Jake has officially broken the Matrix. Nice work mate!

Schools of bonito have drawn plenty of lure casters to the North and South moles where the hard-going scrappers have been feasting on bait schools. They have been taking a range of lures, as well as small mulies, but the best results have come from using smaller lures such as 20g Halco Twistys, micro jigs, Halco Laser Pros and even old-school Nilsmasters. The Moles also offered herring and a few skippy throughout the day when burley was used, as well as chopper tailor at night. Skippy, herring and chopper tailor have also come from the rock walls around South Fremantle. The metro beaches have been fishing well for tailor too, with reefy areas such as Cottesloe, Trigg and the northern beaches and rock walls such as Hillarys, Mindarie and Quinns holding bigger fish. Calmer beaches such as Floreat and City Beach have held smaller tailor and plenty of herring, especially in the mornings. The odd school mulloway has also popped at up along the coast. The northern beaches produced pink snapper for drone fishers. The Swan River is fishing exceptionally well for tailor, with many fish over 50cm landed. Small stickbaits and poppers have worked best and the better spots have been Point Walter, Claremont, Blackwall Reach, Mosman Bay, Claremont and Deepwater Point. The river is throwing up plenty of decent mulloway as well. Soapies and school-sized fish around 80cm have been in good numbers from the Causeway up river, while a 1.2m mulloway (pictured above) was landed at the Narrows. The old brewery and Canning Bridge traditionally produce good mulloway this time of the year also. Flathead chasers prepared to cover some ground are still getting the odd fish in the traditional lower and middle Swan haunts such as Claremont, Applecross, Bicton and East Fremantle. Flathead have also been a consistent bycatch for bream anglers further up river. Yellowfin whiting have still been caught when night and early morning conditions are glassy in the East Fremantle area, with live baits or very fresh squid working best. Bream have also been widespread in the Swan. Better fish have come from the Causeway as far up as Midland with cubes of mullet and bony herring and soft plastics proving effective. For those prepared to put in the hours, late afternoon has been a good time to chase giant herring from Claremont to the upper reaches. All of today, early on Saturday and early on Monday at this stage look best for land-based fishing. Sunday looks rather choppy.

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
