Fishing Report
18/04/25
This yellowfin tuna found the @halcotackle Laser Pro too irresistable on the troll! With the warmer water still present along the WA coastline, there have been good reports of yellowfin captures right down into our South-West region.

Pic of the Week!

The brag mat wasn't big enough for the horse of a Lake Kununurra barra landed by Jack @good_dhu_dhu this week, with locals saying it's the biggest barra they've seen come out of the area dubbed the barradise capital! This could well be a new world record capture, with the fish estimated at 141cm given it went around 11cm over the 130cm brag mat! A quick snap before this beast was released and we will keep you updated on the record status of this incredible fish!

Broome catches
A big recfishwest congrats to all anglers who competed in the recent Tackle World Broome Thready Shootout! Youngster Max Dearing took out Champion Nipper, with this 98cm thready complimenting his other 88cm and 78cm fish, great work Max!

Boats

Last weekend’s threadfin salmon competition at Crab Creek went very well with plenty caught by the 44 anglers competing, though few reports of barramundi catches came through. Dampier Creek has been holding mainly blue-nosed salmon, but mud crabs have been active in Crab Creek and Little Crab Creek, while down at the Fingers a few threadfin salmon have been about with the mud crabs as well. Bluebone have been caught from the lumps near the Deeps and off the pearl farm in Roebuck Bay where there has been no sign of Spanish mackerel so far. Crews fishing out wide had a lean time of reef species this week. Thankfully the spike in the wind, rain and swell will start to calm down from Saturday into next week, with some nice boating conditions on the horizon.

Shore-based

Access to the Fitzroy River has been tricky of late, but barramundi catches have been reasonable at Langi Crossing and Telegraph Pool. The Town Beach Jetty has been producing for holidaymakers with schools of baitfish holed up and being smashed by trevally and queenfish. Big golden trevally and diamond-back trevally have been caught by anglers wading out on low tide at Entrance Point and casting into the channel, while whiting chasers have been picking up at feed at the Catalinas and at the entrance to Barred Creek, despite vehicle access being difficult at the latter spot.

Big thanks to the crew from Tackle World Broome for their tips! Make sure you pay them a visit for the best gear and advice for your next fishing trip.
Exmouth catches
A lovely red emperor landed aboard @exmouth_fishing_charters this week! Note the slightly deformed tail (which didn't prevent it still pulling like a freight train).

Boats

Windy conditions have made many sessions short, but a lot of crews have been able to target the west side of the Cape where they have encountered black marlin and sailfish inshore along with dolphinfish and wahoo at the FADs. Longtail, yellowfin and mack-tuna have also been about on the troll, while blue marlin have been out wide but only a few crews have been able to get to them. For bottom droppers out west the prize catch this week was a 92cm green jobfish taken in around 60m. These depths have also produced red emperor and coral trout, while the 80m-plus depths have held good numbers of goldband snapper. Spanish mackerel have been about Helby Bank, but a lot of them have been caught in halves as shark have been a big nuisance so it pays to move around and not hover in one spot for too long. Spaniards have also been taken around the North Passage in 10-30m. Crews targeting the lagoons have been getting spangled emperor, dart and queenfish. Big Spanish mackerel have been landed on the north side of the Muirons, which have also produced lots of golden trevally, a few giant trevally, coral trout and a few Rankin cod. In Exmouth Gulf, Cooper Shoals has yielded blue-lined emperor and Spanish flag, while fly-fishers around the Bay of Rest have encountered giant trevally and permit. School mackerel, longtail tuna and mack-tuna have also been active in the Gulf, while those fishing in close have been doing much better on squid. Thankfully Sunday onwards is looking much nicer for the boaties so get out there.

Shore-based

It doesn't get much more fun than queenfish on stickbaits and Ben Luff @northern_addicts made easy work of this fish using his Shimano Extraction rod. Be careful when handling queenfish as they have some nasty spines near their dorsal and anal fins.

In Exmouth Gulf holidaymakers have been enjoying good sessions on whiting around Bundegi and down at Learmonth. Both these locations have also offered decent queenfish and a few trevally and mangrove jack. Bream have been thick at the Learmonth Jetty, along with a few squid. The town marina has been producing cod, small trevally and mangrove jack, while squid have been taken from the outside rock wall. Wapet Creek has produced mangrove jack and cod as well, while from VLF Bay right around the tip of the Cape, spangled emperor, queenfish and golden trevally have been the main catches. At Tantabiddi and Winderbandi, spangled emperor, dart, golden trevally and queenfish have been landed.

These great tips were courtesy of the friendly team at Tackle World Exmouth. Swing by their store for the best advice and gear ahead of your next trip!

Kalbarri catches
A golden catch and release fishing session for Shimano ambassador @nickihuntfishing this week!

Boats

Water temperatures have warmed up, so much so that a couple of marlin where hooked and several more sighted straight out from town. Spanish mackerel and tuna have been in reasonable numbers to the north of town, but floating weed and swells have made trolling difficult. Bottom fishing has been good with lots of pink snapper and quite a few dhufish close in, along with Rankin cod and baldchin groper. The 20m depths have been producing best with Sand Patch and along the cliffs the better spots. Inside Oyster Reef saw yellowfin whiting targeted when the swells have been low. Saturday onwards is looking ideal for a send out in the boats.

Shore-based

Tailor and the odd pink snapper have been landed from the cliffs, while chopper tailor, herring and dart have been the main catches at Wittecarra and Red Bluff in the mornings. Chopper tailor have been active at the Murchison River mouth and they have gone into the system as far up as the town marina where schoolkids have been having a ball throwing small metal slices at them. Decent cod and bream have been caught at the marina jetty, while mud crabs have been as far up river as Castle Rock. Yellowfin whiting have been active around the town foreshore and the Sand Spit. Saturday onwards looks ideal for land-based fishing as well, including ballooning.

Shout out to Dean from Kalbarri Sports and Dive for his tips! Feel free to venture into his store to ask for advice if you're wetting a line around Kalbarri!
Geraldton catches
Just goes to show that the Spanish mackerel aren't far off Geraldton's doorstep at the moment, with @mat.svenson landing this solid fish off the yak.

Boats

There have been plenty of pink snapper west of town in 50m or so, along with the odd good-sized coral trout. South of town in 25-30 dhufish have been prominent along with baldchin groper. Catches have been widespread for the demersals in general, but the pelagic activity has been mostly quiet despite a few Spaniards popping up close to town for those trolling garfish baits. It’s still looking pretty rough on the forecast this weekend, but Monday evening and Tuesday morning should see some nice boating windows.

Shore-based

Weed has been a nightmare for shore fishers, but the first and second points at Greenough have produced tailor and pike, with school mulloway at the first point at times. Glendinning Road has offered herring, whiting and dart, while Pages Beach has held a few tailor. The back of the town breakwater has held tailor, school whiting and small herring. Good herring have come from the eastern breakwater and the Dome Cafe groyne, with the breakwater also offering decent tailor. North of the Batavia Coast Marina saw herring and tailor active, as were squid when the water was clear. Sunset Beach has produced skippy and small tailor when it wasn’t weeded out.  At Drummond Cove and Coronation Beach reasonable mulloway have been caught also when the weed hasn’t been bad, with a 20kg model landed north of Coronation last weekend. This area has been plagued by small northern forktail catfish. A few soapy mulloway have been caught inside the Batavia Coast Marina, while in the Greenough River bream chasers have also caught small giant herring.

Thanks to the team at Geraldton Sports Centre for their tips! They will happily provide you with great gear and the solid advice for your next fishing trip.
Lancelin catches
Recfishwest's @kimdevries190 was up in Jurien Bay for the recent marlin competition and spread out her fishing skills across some great species, with this nice wahoo coming aboard along with a solid pink snapper.

Boats

Those chasing a feed of demersal species again reported the 30-40m depths as best, with dhufish captures coming in quite close to shore and White Bank working best for pink snapper and baldchin groper. Large schools of herring and skippy have been persistent throughout the bay and larger tailor have been among them at times. There is an abundance of small baitfish in the 20-30m depths still with yellowfin tuna and southern bluefin a chance in these areas. Sunday onwards looks best at this stage with the swell dropping below 2m.

Shore-based

Larger mulloway mostly turned up south of town in the evenings. Tailor catches are improving and larger specimens are starting to turn up, with 50cm+ models now popping up. Lancelin Jetty has been fishing well in the evenings with catches of herring, smaller tailor and skippy. With the stronger easterly winds expected, balooning could be worth a shot this weekend and a chance of a larger pelagic or demersal could be on the cards. Shark captures were best outside of town in the evenings. The easterly wind should make it decent for land-based fishers this weekend and we expect tailor catches to take a good bump.

Big thanks to Peter Fullarton for his tips on what's biting around Lancelin each week! If you want Peter to put you on to the fish directly, make sure you check out his Tailored Treks Tours page. Always a great time and Peter knows the best spots around Lancelin like the back of his hand.

Esperance catches
Gideon Mettam @gidos_fishing_adventures didn't waste any time putting his new drone to good use! A couple of nice Sambos came ashore in his recent YouTube video, check it out here!

Boats

Nannygai and pink snapper have been prolific at Figure and Red islands, while Samsonfish and big queen snapper have been at Mondrain Island. Sizeable blue groper have been landed at Rabbit Island, while tuna have been taken at Figure of Eight and Boxer Islands. Big King George whiting and flathead have been in the corner of Wylie Bay, while there have been lots of sand whiting at Fourth Beach and Chapman Point. Squid and herring have been plentiful in Esperance Bay. Sunday looks to be the best day for the boaties this week.

Shore-based

Good numbers of gummy sharks and mulloway have been caught at Israelite Bay, while Thomas River and Tagon Beach have held gummy sharks and salmon. Good numbers of mulloway have been holding at Poison Creek. Sizeable salmon and skippy have been at Dunns Beach, while Stockyards has fished well for smaller salmon, flathead and big sand whiting. All the beaches west of town have been busy with migrating Albany-bound salmon, while Taylor Street Jetty and the Town Jetty have fished well at night for herring, skippy, garfish and squid. King George whiting and flathead have been the main catches at the town foreshore and Bandy Creek Boat Harbour, while bream to 40cm have been active in Woody Lake.

Hats off to the very knowledgeable team at Southern Sports & Tackle for their tips! These guys love their fishing as well, so make sure you swing by their store for the best gear and advice before wetting a line around Esperance.

Great Southern catches
We're receiving some great snaps in our salmon photo competition and seven-year old Lenni Ducas landed her first ever salmon off Salmon Holes this week before backing it up with another! Was great to see fishers playing it safe and keeping the sand between their toes given the large swell warning over the weekend.

Boats

Bonito have been taken in good numbers around the islands and a few small tuna have been among them. The clearer patches of King George Sound have offered a squid, but there have been few reports of King George whiting. Fishing along the lines of clean and dirty water can often produce good catches though as the KG’s target the nutrients being washed out the rivers. Few crews have managed to get to the coral ground. Saturday and Sunday are looking good on the forecast!

Shore-based

It’s all about the salmon this week and schools have been passing through on most days. Cheynes Beach has continued to fire, but the beach at Salmon Holes has become much more consistent. Other good spots have been Shelley Beach, Lowlands, Sand Patch and Nanarup and they have been thick at Bremer Bay. A few salmon have been caught at Ocean Beach, Muttonbird Beach and up at Mandalay Beach, and Banksia Camp near Walpole. Windy Harbour has held mainly herring. Salmon chasers seem to be doing better on lures this season with the Ocean’s Legacy Sling Shot a popular choice. Around Torbay, drone fishers have picked up pink snapper off the beaches. The King George Sound and the King and Kalgan rivers are still very dirty and bream chasers have found cleaner water at Stokes Inlet, Torbay and Denmark’s Wilson Inlet. Those chasing squid, herring, skippy and King George whiting have done best at Frenchman Bay, where the water is much clearer close in. Blue swimmer crabs seem to have left Princess Royal Harbour.

Cheers to the Trailblazers Albany crew for their fishing tips this week! Swing by their store if you're after some top gear and advice ahead of your next fishing trip. Remember, you'll also catch just as many fish off the beaches than the rocks and it is always much safer to go with this option on the south coast.

South-West catches
Whenever you're moving around or coming back to shore, make sure you have some lures trolling out the back as you're a good chance of picking up a nice bluefin tuna or other pelagics like @southwest_oz did this week while heading back to Dunsborough.

Boats

Demersals didn’t seem to be playing the game this week around Bunbury. Dhufish were very quiet and although pink snapper were in reasonable numbers, most were undersize. Decent skippy were a consolation prize for snapper chasers and some big Samsonfish have been mooching about the lumps. Small yellowtail kingfish have been taken towards the Bouvards and squid and cuttlefish have been in good numbers. The squid were in 5-15m and cuttlefish in just about any depth, including way out wide. Kayak fishers in Koombana Bay have been getting good mixed bags of skippy, herring, flathead, tarwhine and snook. Demersal fishing has been better in Geographe Bay around Four-Mile Reef which has offered dhufish and good pink snapper, while bonito and yellowtail kingfish have been abundant. Kayak fishers off Smiths beach have been getting dhufish, big skippy and yellowtail kingfish. Fresh wrasse baits have worked well on the dhufish. In the Leschenault Estuary blue swimmer crabs have been in good numbers and herring and tailor have been plentiful. Saturday through to Tuesday on the forecast looks inviting.

Shore-based

Salmon have started to inch their way around the Capes and they have been taken at Injidup, Bunker Bay, Dunsborough, Meelup, Hamelin Bay, Boranup, Castle Rock and Boojidup Beach. They have not been in a feeding frenzy and live baits have often been the only means of getting a strike. Tailor and yellowtail kingfish have been swimming with the salmon at Injidup, which along with Bunker Bay has been the most consistent location for salmon. Tailor catches have been great from beaches either side of Bunbury and herring have been in reasonable numbers as well. Drone fishers have picked up pink snapper at Back Beach, Dalyellup, Preston Beach and Myalup. Dalyellup has been thick with herring and has also produced soapy mulloway and garfish. The Bunbury Cut has offered herring, chopper tailor, skippy and a few squid, while herring and squid have been the main catches at Busselton Jetty. A few skippy, small Samsonfish and juvenile dhufish have been taken from the end of the jetty at times. A decent pink snapper was landed at Old Dunsborough, where herring and sand whiting have been in good numbers, while scooping for blue swimmer crabs in Geographe Bay and the Leschenault Inlet has been worthwhile towards the Busselton end. Bream have been in good numbers in the Blackwood River, while the Collie River has offered soapy mulloway and small giant herring.

Big cheers to Whitey's Tackle & Camping for their top fishing tips as always! If you're in Australind or Bunbury and are keen to wet a line throughout our South-West make sure you ask their very friendly team who love their fishing for advice and stock up on gear at their store. If you're in Busselton, the 2 Oceans Tackle team are also incredibly helpful.

Trust us when we say redfin perch are worth the fiddly effort of filleting when you taste their five-star quality flesh. They do have a rather thick skin, so we recommend using a very sharp knife and sharpening as you go to make it easier. A lovely fish landed by @bushrats during a morning session this week.
The deeper sections of the Collie and Capel Rivers, Harvey and Wellington dams and Pemberton region have fished steadily for mainly small redfin perch. They have been fussy at times and anglers prepared to mix up their lure selection have done best. Small hard-bodies and dark-coloured soft plastics have been good lures to start with. When the water temperatures start to cool, bigger redfin are expected to become active. Trout continue to be elusive but finding faster flowing water has been the key.
Mandurah and surrounds

Boats: Dawesville has fished well for dhufish and pink snapper from as little as 16m with sizeable breaksea cod among the bycatch. The Five-Fathom bank has been fishing well for pink snapper in the late afternoons and evenings with plenty of big skippy keeping the pinkies company with decent King George whiting also kicking around the 24m marks. Squid and sand whiting have been in good numbers inside the Five. Inshore waters and the Peel-Harvey Estuary have fished well for skippy, herring and tailor and when the swells have been low, squid have been caught off Seascapes and Melros. A scattering of dolphinfish and tuna have been at the FADs some days. Blue swimmer crabs have been rewarding drop netters. Saturday onwards is looking great on the forecast.

Land-based: Beaches from White Hills through to Madora Bay have been producing good numbers of tailor, herring and skippy and school mulloway have turned up at times also. Around White Hills and Tims Thicket juvenile salmon and the odd resident fish have been taken. The Cut has fished well for herring, tailor and decent-sized skippy, while on calmer days squid have been active. When the swells have been up pink snapper around 55cm have been landed at the Dawesville Cut and the Mandurah rock wall. A few bream have been holed up in in the Serpentine and Murray rivers but better numbers have been in the marinas and canals in the estuary. Scooping for crabs has become a lot harder but a few have been found at first and last light, while for yellowfin whiting chasers it has been a case of quality over quantity with a few 30cm-plus tings in the middle sections of the estuary system.

Thinking of wetting a line around Mandurah? These great tips were courtesy of the super friendly and helpful team at Tackle World Miami so make sure you swing by their store for the best tips and gear before your next fishing trip!

SECRET HARBOUR / PORT KENNEDY / ROCKINGHAM / SAFETY BAY / WARNBRO SOUND

Boats: Dhufish and pink snapper have been fishing well in 40m-plus depths behind Garden Island and out towards the Five-Fathom Bank. Good baldchin groper, King George whiting and the odd harlequin fish have been among the bycatch. Inshore pelagic action has slowed, but Spanish mackerel and bonito have been landed in Cockburn Sound where pink snapper and skippy have also been in good numbers. Tailor and herring have been abundant inshore. Dolphinfish have been skittish at the FADs, but the deeper depths nearby have been producing wahoo, tuna and bonito. Drop netting for blue swimmer crabs is still productive in Cockburn Sound, while squid have been in better numbers in shallower depths with Mangles Bay, Parmelia Bank, Safety Bay and the inside of Garden Island productive for them. These areas were also offering herring, sand whiting and King George whiting. Squid have also been active in 6-8m off Woodman Point. Crayfishers have been finding a few reds on the reefs near Garden Island. Saturday onwards is looking decent on the forecast.

Land-based: Most beaches have been producing good numbers of tailor and herring, with Secret Harbour, Port Kennedy and Long Point the pick of the spots. Skippy have been in good numbers at Long Point, while Secret Harbour produced a few pink snapper during the unsettled weather last weekend and the odd resident salmon has been swimming with the tailor schools there. A few soapy mulloway have turned up on local beaches while the Ammo Jetty, Rockingham Jetty, Palm Beach Jetty and Woodman Point have offered their usual fare of herring, chopper tailor, scaly mackerel, small skippy and squid. Garfish have turned up in big numbers at times at Woodman Point and at least three pink snapper were picked up at Woodies this week. Blue swimmer crabs have been in good numbers close in off the Rockingham foreshore for those prepared to swim out and pick them up. Squid have been caught at Point Peron, but the wind has made fishing difficult at times.

These great fishing tips were provided by the friendly team at Compleat Angler & Camping World in Rockingham, so make sure you chat to their experienced crew in store and stock up before heading out!
Perth catches
The Swan River is still producing delicious feeds of crabs for those willing to put in the effort, like seven-year old Julian and his family! He begged his auntie Alanna for weeks to take them crabbing and he managed to produce the goods, nice work mate!

Boats

Pink snapper have been plentiful in the 40m depths around Rottnest and off Mindarie, while medium-sized dhufish, breaksea cod and baldchin groper have been active on the isolated lumps in 30m or so. Pink snapper have been in very close almost within casting distance off Two Rocks. King George whiting have been scattered, but good ones have come from the Three-Mile Reef. They have been mixed in with sand whiting at the Windmills and inshore from Fremantle where tailor and skippy have also been active. Sand whiting have been thick off the northern suburbs. Squid have been in good numbers inshore from Fremantle off Coogee and in the bays at Rottnest Island. Spanish mackerel have active south of Rottnest and at the Three-Mile Reef. Marlin continued to be sighted in the Rottnest Trench, while the FADs have offered dolphinfish, bonito and wahoo. Blue swimmer crab catches were consistent in the deeper pockets of the Swan River, but tailor catches have dwindled, although the Applecross area has been worth a shot. The weather is looking nice this weekend for the boaties so get out there.

Shore-based

In the Swan River the Causeway upstream has fished well for bream. Finding baitfish has been the key to a good session. Soapy mulloway have been mixed in with the bream, along with a few small giant herring and the odd flathead. Better giant herring have also shown up in the middle reaches, along with the odd tailor. A few flathead in the mid-40cm range were taken at Applecross on the weekend and Applecross is probably the pick of the land-based river tailor spots, but keep an eye out for bull sharks and don’t wade out too deep. Tailor catches have been good around Cottesloe, from the northern beaches, off Coogee and at North and South Moles, with the Moles also yielding herring, skippy and garfish. Floreat Beach has held mainly herring, but there have been plenty of them. The northern beaches have produced pink snapper, while the rock walls in South Fremantle have offered, herring, skippy and squid. There have been unconfirmed reports of big mulloway being pulled from the scaly mackerel schools that are thick in Fremantle Harbour so it could be worth trying for them. The Freo harbour has also held yellowtail and a few herring. This weekend looks great for land-based fishing as well so wet a line!

A big thanks to Anglers Fishing World in Fremantle for their great tips! These guys love their fishing just as much as we all do, so make sure you ask their super friendly team for advice and stock up before wetting a line off the land or boat!
