The Weather Bureau got it all wrong Monday when the 10-to-15-mph south wind predicted turned out to be twice that. Tuesday's forecast was terrible, but it didn't turn out nearly as bad as predicted. There were no boat reports, as most skippers cancelled in advance due to the forecast, but surfcasters in Island Beach State Park got into big stripers on poppers. Betty & Nick's in Seaside Park weighed a 43-pounder that Dave Lynch beached on a pencil popper. Dave Mehters brought in a 30-pound bass that hit metal in the park.
The forecast is even worse for Wednesday, but surfcasters will be waiting for a repeat of that action. Thursday looks better, and that's when most party boats should be getting back to business.
Hopefully the rain will be out of the picture by Friday for the annual Manhattan Cup fishing tournament in New York City, an event that almost traditionally gets blasted with bad weather but is never postponed.
Cod are still in the picture, and Capt. Jeff Gutman of the Voyager from Point Pleasant expects to catch them into June. His trip last Friday produced an average of five to 10 keeper cod a man, with most of those in the 5-to-10-pound class. Bill Tevlin of Freehold caught 18 up to 10 pounds. Dennis De Palma of Montville boated a cod just under 30 pounds, but Rich Mansfield of Wall had the pool winner with a 38-pound pollock. The Voyager will be sailing for cod every Tuesday at 5a.m. Weekend ling fishing was off in a big swell.
