Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.

It was a mixed bag Saturday for striper anglers as a few did very well, but most had a hard time finding both bait and fish. Capt. Hans Kaspersetz and I had thought we had it made with Sheri Berri from Baker's Marina on the Bay when we came across good fish marks off the Highlands Bridge. However, we drifted live bunkers through them a couple of times without a bump. Running down the beach we then started drifts in 50 feet where there were no marks. Yet, I started hooking fish. After getting shut out the day before, I could do no wrong today -- five hits and five bass from 35 to 44 1/2 inches that kept a new Canyon Reel humming. I started catching while free-lining a live bunker, and the others soon took off their sinkers and did likewise. Kaspersetz got bitten off twice by bluefish, and Mike Fett of Wood-Ridge twice had smooth dogfish follow him in while eating his bunker -- but I wasn't bothered by anything except stripers. Kaspersetz boated a 30-inch striper before we headed in at 10:30, and Fett's grandson, Adam Reigold (9) of Franklin Lakes, had a big fish hit a dead stick spinning rod before it surprisingly spit the circle hook. Adam kept busy netting hooked stripers, and catching bunkers when needed from Sheri Berri's deep live well in the deck.
We passed our remaining live baits over to Gen Graman of Middletown, who was down to his last three on That's It from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands. He called later to report a hot bite on those baits after the tide turned. That included an amazing doubleheader in which one bass somehow got the braided line caught in the corner of the mouth while the hooked fish was on the same line further back.
Capt. Sal Cursi of Cathy Sea from Sewaren was also catching big bass steadily after having to run south for bait. There was so much bunker out there Friday that he decided not to net it first in the bay -- and almost paid the price after running well down the beach before he found a netable reading.
Cursi had also made the day Friday for Capt. Ron Santee on the Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands when he passed his remaining bunkers over -- and big bass came up off Sandy Hook. Jill Goldstein of Summitt boated bassof 32 and 28 pounds. Jason White won the pool with a 44-incher, and Capt. Ron added a 30-pounder. Unfortunately, those fish didn't show today.
Capt. Rob Semkewyc of the Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands was into those big bass Friday on jigs and Storm shads, even though those 19-to-32-pounders were hard to tempt with artificials. With no sign of bass Saturday, he managed to find some small blues plus a few fluke and big sea bass.
Bunkers were relatively scarce off Manasquan and Shark River inlets, and not many bass were reported along that section of the coast.
There was a good sea bass opener Saturday for Ross Goldberg and his crew on Lady J from Belmar. They fished rough bottom in deeper waters for both cod and 3-pound sea bass. Also aboard were Dave Sherman and J. Vodofsky.
Twin Lights Marina weighed a 38-pound striper taken on a live bunker by Scott Beim on Cara Marie, where Beim's cousin, Dave Reich, had a 28-pounder.
Capt. Stan Zagleski said fluking off Sandy Hook on his Elaine B. from Highlands wasn't as good as it had been the last few days, but there were still a lot of shorts -- and Tony Status of Old Bridge bagged six keepers.
