After a very hot day of striper fishing on Monday, the fishery went the other way Tuesday. Capt. Jim O'Grady of the Cock Robin at Point Pleasant said stripers failed to appear south of the inlet again after the previous day's red hot mid-day bite. However, he did get a report from Beach Haven that the bass were providing similar action to the south. The Cock Robin is sailing at 6 a.m. Wednesday in order to get in on the early bite. Capt. Bud McArthur of Splinter from Brick said he was arm weary from catching big stripers during the great mid-day bite Monday off Point Pleasant, but he didn't hear of anything doing this morning. Capt. Vinny Vetere of Katfish Charters in Great Kills, Staten Island returned to the Sandy Hook area that provided a good catch Monday, only to come up with a very unexpected doughnut even though he ended up running as far south as Manasquan. Capt. Dave DeGennaro of Hi-Flier from Barnegat has been doing well working the bunker schools off Island Beach StatePark, and is running open when not chartered. There was better news on the fluke front. Capt. Stan Zagleski of Elaine B. at Highlands fished the flats for steady action and large fish. Duhan Derdi of Totawa won the pool with a 6 7/16-pound fluke Bob Moore of Clifton fished the mouth of Shrewsbury River for six keeper fluke on spearing, and lost an 8-pounder at boatside. Allen Riley of South Plainfield said there was only one brief flurry of 1-pound blues in the Sandy Hook surf this morning, though lures did attract sea robins. Bait fishermen were catching smooth dogfish, and Ed Riley of Edison also hooked a stargazer. Yellowfin and bluefin tuna have been reported from the canyons. The Canyon Runner from Point Pleasant has a last minute cancellation available at a discount.
