Lady angler beats a thresher -- on a bunker spoon

Denise Marie Theiler joined her fiance, Tom Paglioroli of Rack & Fin Radio, 97.3 ESPN FM in Atlantic City, to fish for stripers this morning with Capt. Kenny Gallop on his Big Kid from Brielle Yacht Club during the Manasquan River Marlin & Tuna Club Striped Bass Tournament. There were plenty of bunkers between Lavallette and Ortley Beach, but the only striper hit was missed before Gallop started trolling Tony Maja bunker spoons. Denise Marie took the first strike on a white number three spoon, and was soon getting beaten up on the wire line outfit by a much bigger fish than anticipated. With Captains Pete Papa and Eric Jacobson also aboard, there was the manpower needed to boat a very surprised 236-pound thresher shark after a one hour, fifty minute battle.

The first party boat doormat fluke reported to me was taken Monday on the Elaine B. from Highlands. Larry White of Rutherford boated the 10.2-pounder, and added a 6.4-pound fluke. Weekend catches included a 7.1-pounder by Kathleen Gomez of Staten Island; a 6.9-pounder for Frank Dec of Haskell; a 6.6-pounder by Tony Status from Old Bridge; and a 6.5-pounder for Mike Scher of Cranford.

Tank Matraxia and Rob DeYoung of Lyndhurst rented a skiff from Schupp's in Highlands to fish upriver in the Shrewsbury this morning for a dozen keeper fluke and very few shorts.

Striper fishing down the beach was tough this morning in an unexpected northeast wind and choppy seas. Capt. Pete Wagner of Hyper Striper from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands still managed to put the Steve Bertones party from Middletown into three bass up to 28 pounds on bunkers. The afternoon trip was much better as Ken Diglio's group from Point Pleasant caught 15 from 18 to 38 pounds. Jumbo blues are thick in the same areas.

Capt. Jimmy Elliott said Saturday night bluefishing on Miss Belmar Princess was excellent for 5-to-10-pounders, though Samantha Sammie of Boonton found an 18-pounder among them. Elliott said they hit on everything.

Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. said Sunday's bluefishing on his Jamaica from Brielle was the best of the season as he fished for 6-to-13-pounders along the edges of the Mud Hole.

At Point Pleasant, Capt. Jim O'Grady couldn't find bunkers for snagging Sunday from his Cock Robin, so he headed offshore to load up with 6-to-10-pound blues on both jigs and bait. Capt. Bob Pennington of the Sea Devil found all the 6-to-10-pounders his fares wanted Sunday while jigging offshore.

John Bushnell at Betty & Nick's in Seaside Park said surfcasting has been slow, with no bass weigh-ins for five days as the water temperature dropped to 63 degrees.
