Between school bluefins in Chicken Canyon and some yellowfins in the "real" canyons, there's already plenty of offshore trolling action. Throw in some makos and it's hot offshore. The two Canyon Runner boats from Point Pleasant started with bluefins Sunday, and ended with them Monday after making a trip to the canyon for a shot at yellowfins in the 25-to-30-pound class. Night fishing for makos turned out to be best inshore, as there was nothing in the canyon. The two boats totaled 58 bluefins from 30 to70 pounds, 12 yellowfins, four makos and 18 blue sharks. The makos included two good ones of 180 and 200 pounds. Of course, all those bluefins couldn't be retained, as each boat had to settle for the "one under and one over" as was the case last year. Canyon Runner spreader bars accounted for most of the tuna.
Kayak fishermen have been doing very well in the Ortley Beach area this week, Betty & Nick's in Seaside Park weighed in a 32-pounder for Theo Shupein yesterday morning after he hooked it on a bunker. They also weighed a 40-pounder caught the night before in the surf at the Bathouse on Island Beach State Park by Kenin McGinn, who used a bunker head and fished through the dogfish. Then there was a 43-pound, 14-ounce bass on a bunker in the surf today by Chris Buchta of the Asbury Park Fishing Club. Surfcasters are usually trying to cast as far out as the boats, but one boater got in too close today and got thrown up on the beach by the waves.
Chris Lido, editor of The Fisherman magazine, put in his time Thursday night in the Mantoloking surf with bunker to fish through smooth dogfish before he hooked a keeper bass.
The Tackle Box in Hazlet weighed a 7 1/2-pound fluke for Gerri Clark of Port Monmouth after she caught it on Gulp and killie at Port Monmouth Pier. Other recent catches included a 40 1/4-pound striper on bunker at Shrewsbury Rocks by Joe Vartnicki of Hackettstown, whose son Hunter (10) caught a 31 1/4-pounder there last week. James Hancharick of Bethlehem, Pa. had a 40 1/4-pounder on bunker.
Don Golabek of Clifton and a buddy fished the mouth of the Shrewsbury on Wednesday for seven keeper fluke. Don saw a car slip into the water at the Atlantic Highlands ramp -- and warned trailer boaters to use chocks there.
The first two-day tilefish trip of the Voyager from Point Pleasant encountered strong currents requiring 3 to 4 pounds of lead to hold bottom. However, some blueline tilefish were caught in shallower depths before returning to the golden tile depths when the current eased for a pick of 25-to-30-pounders. Dennis Muhlenforth of Hockessin, De. won the pool with a 34-pounder to edge out Dave Arbeitman of The Reel Seat in Point Pleasant.
Capt. Jeff Gutman said Wednesday's cod trip produced up to 10 keepers on bait, though jigs tempted the biggest cod. Kevin Lovach of Lanoka Harbor boated a 44-pounder that's the best of the season on the Voyager. Eddie Aspril had a 34-pound pollock.There'll be an open cod trip at 5 a.m. Tuesday. The Voyager fishes Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 for sea bass and ling. Night ling trips depart at 6:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
Capt. John Kolias had hot fluking on his magic hours trip Thursday with Reel Fun from Sea Bright. Elizabeth Dickerson from Weehawkin, and her sisters Laura and Susan, caught 49 fluke, including eight keepers, while working a 200-yard drift.
Allen Riley went fluking Thursday on Capt. Hal Hagaman's Sea Tiger II from Atlantic Highlands. He said there was plenty of action at the point of the Hook and at the TC Buoy, though Raritan Reach was slow, There were lots of shorts, but also a good sprinkling of keepers in the 2-to-5-pound class. Riley and Dan Wong of Edison each bagged a fluke, and Duke Matero of Piscataway released nine shorts. Neil Russo of Knoxville, Tn. won the pool with a 6.25-pounder.
