There was lots of action today in the winner-take-all Brett Bailey Memorial Mako Tournament in Brielle as anglers had ideal conditions. Bob Correll of Bay Head fished aboard Official Business as they were inundated by blue sharks in Chicken Canyon, but managed a 200-pound thresher that got hooked in the side on the strike and had them fooled into thinking they had a much bigger shark. Threshers win in that contest if there are no makos, and Capt. Ralph Layrer of the Last Lady weighed a 575-pounder. Mike Smith of Chelsea at Southside Marina wasn't in the tournament, but he boated a 290-pound mako that might have been able to win it.  I'm sure he'll be in the big one -- Mako Mania -- next weekend. I'll list the winning mako whenever official results are supplied. To top off their day, Official Business trolled a 43-pound bluefin tuna and lost another.

John DeBona, advertising manager of The Fishererman magazine, fished from Shark River south to Seaside this morning and found many bunker schools. None of them produced a bass, and he only saw one being fought. The highlight was seeing a large whale in the bunker schools.

Capt. Pete Wagner of Hyper-Striper at Twin Lights Marina in Highlands says his live-baiting has been good, though limits aren't always boated. The Vince Luchiano party from L.B.I. caught eight bass up to 28 pounds in the morning, and Mike Wagner's group from Trenton had eight to 26 pounds this afternoon.

Capt. Jimmy Elliott reported very good Friday night bluefishing in the Mud Hole from Miss Belmar Princess. The south wind moved the concentration he had been fishing on, but it didn't take long to find another.
