The best early summer run of school bluefin tuna in years has hit a snag in the form of big bluefish. Capt. Arthur Stokes of Fintastic from Clarks Landing in Point Pleasant said he trolled Suday from the Atlantic Princess almost to Hudson Canyon and couldn't get away from the choppers tearing up his spreader bars. One bluefin was boated, and there were probably a lot more out there, but the blues didn't give them much of a chance.
Surprisingly, the Queen Mary from Point Pleasant had relatively slow Mud Hole bluefishing Sunday before it improved considerably today.
Capt. Ed Bunting pf the Sea Horse from Atlantic Highlands had good news about a resurgence of fluke in Raritan Reach. He had 19 keepers on the boat Saturday morning, and 21 for a much smaller crowd in the afternoon. Sunday produced 81 legal fluke. John Addanasio from Montana boated a 9 1/2-pounder, and Ron Jaraek had a 5-pounder.
Paul Haertel's first "50", taken last Wednesday afternoon on a live bunker, weighed 52 pounds, 4 ounces. Despite heavy rain, the lightning stayed at a distance as he fished alone in his boat to also release 13 bass from 20 to 35 pounds.
Capt. Sal Cursi of Cathy Sea at Sewaren chunked a 53-inch, 50-pounder Saturday down the beach, but went back today only to find his snag overrun by bluefish.
Allen Riley of South Plainfield said there wasn't much in the Monmouth Beach surf early this morning, though he did catch a 1-pound blue on a Deadly Dick. The "big " fish was an 18.5-inch fluke caught on Gulp by Duke Matero of Piscataway.
Betty & Nick's in Seaside Park reported some blues in the Seaside surf, while fluke and triggerfish are possibilities at the inlet.
