Mako Mania, sponsored by the Greater Point Pleasant Charter Boat Association, had a successful 26th run over the weekend as the 238 boats entered weighed in 22 makos at Clarks Landing in Point Pleasant. Most also released blue sharks, and some released makos under the 66-inch fork length minimum. It's likely that others also released makos of eligible size that wouldn't have made the board during the second day. The weather worked out fine after heavy rain at Friday evening's captains meeting.
Though there were no trophy makos brought in, four over 200 pounds were impressive enough. Peter Casagrande was the clear winner with the 88-inch, 280-pounder boated Saturday on his American Mustang. Rick Popovitch finished second at 247.5 pounds on Tashtego, and third went to Allan Lee's Mushin for a 219-pound mako. Todd Collins was fourth on Fish This at 194.5 pounds. There was almost a dead heat for fifth, as Cole Svenson's 176-pounder on Cheap Shot nosed out Lou Chiarolanza's nearly identical 75-incher on Hard to Catch by a half-pound. Then came two172-pound makos brought in by Danny Sacca on Mongoose, and by Rob Crocitto aboard Bunker Box.
Capt. Pete Grimbilas, a tournament organizer, fished aboard Sid Gold's Can Do Too 60 miles offshore. They didn't find the makos sought, but caught three dolphin (the first reported to me) in the 20-pound class.
Tournament proceeds will be used to fund expansion of artificial reefs once the pots are removed from them.
