American Mustang weighed a 280-pound mako shark Saturday in the Mako Mania Tournament, sponsored by the Greater Point Pleasant Charter Boat Association, at Clarks Landing in Point Pleasant, and was never seriously challanged before the contest concluded at 7 p.m. today. I spent a couple of hours on the dock waiting for an exceptional mako, but only a few eligible makos well short of placing in the top six were brought in. I'll post the official results tomorrow.
Congratulations to Paul Haertel, as the veteran jetty fishermen went out on his boat in Wednesday's heavy rain to catch his first 50-pound striper. More details tomorrow.
There was no good reason for it, but Dave Lilly of Hazlet said currents were exceptionally strong today as he tried ocean fluking. A pound of lead could hardly hold, and fluking was poor. He did get a surprise when a seven-foot thresher shark hit his squid and mullet bait as it was dropping. That fish was fought for a half-hour before finally breaking the 50-pound leader.
The current wasn't a problem for Bruce Vitale of Piscataway and Mike Obuch from Bridgewater on Funny Pharm as they had a good ocean catch while not using more than 8 ounces. Included were three fluke from 5 to 7 pounds.
Capt. Joe Bogan is fishing rough bottom around the reefs with Jamaica II from Brielle to catch quite a few large fluke. Fred Morris of Ewing had eight up to 6 pounds; Edward Berger of North Bergen bagged six to 5 1/2 pounds; and Ed Nolan of Manasquan hooked six to 5 pounds. The first Saturday night bluefish trip was very successful for blues in the 5-to-10 pound class, with a 14-pound pool winner.
Capt. Pete Wagner of Hyper Striper at Twin Lights Marina in Highlands continues to do well live-baiting stripers. The Matt Battz party from Pa. caught a dozen 18-to-28-pounders Saturday before adding nine fluke. The Lou Figerello group from Elmwood Park caught a dozen from 16 to 24 pounds
