Capt. John Kolias of Reel Fun from Sea Bright had a fine magic hours fluke trip today with Bob Leiberman and his son Bailey from Hogh Bridge. They drifted Flynn's Knoll on the flood to catch 34 fluke, including seven keepers up to Bailey's 5 1/8-pounder.
Tank Matraxia of Lyndhurst fished Raritan Reach on Monday aboard Capt. John from Keyport to boat two keepers, though some others did much better.
Striped bass fishing was spotty down the beach today. Rich Carrione Sr. and Jr. and their crew were aboard Sheri Berri from Baker's Marina on the Bay along with Tom Morford Jr. of Red Bank and your reporter. We never saw any sign of the bunkers in the ocean off Sandy Hook where anglers had also encountered stripers yesterday. We ended up chunking at Shrewsbury Rocks where there was a lack of current. Bluefish and smooth dogfish provided most of the chunking action, but Rich Sr. saved the day with the only striper. We were getting good readings, and decided to switch to trolling. That didn't work because big blues jumped on the Montauk bunker spoons as soon as we got them out. Gene Graman of Middletown got anchored before us, and had a quick flurry of bass. He ended up with five to 33 pounds.
Capt. Jim O'Grady reported a decent pick of large blues, primarily on bait, from his Cock Robin out of Point Pleasant.
