Fluke provide action along the Shore

As noted yesterday, fluking has been very good in Raritan Reach. However, there's also been steady action in rough bottom areas along the Shore. As noted yesterday, fluking has been very good in Raritan Reach. However, there's also been steady action in rough bottom areas along the Shore. I fished off Elberon for a couple of hours Friday afternoon aboard Harry Wild's Strike Force from Brielle Yacht Club, along with Capt. Chris De Stefano of Wall, Jeffrey Santoro of Elizabeth, and 91-year-old "Uncle" Joe Colucci from Cranford. We picked away at keeper fluke while catching five or 10 to one shorts -- but still ended up with half a dozen up to 23 inches in the box. The biggest was a very thick fluke of about 4 1/2 pounds.

Capt. Lou Grazioso said there was "epic" school bluefin tuna fishing in Chicken Canyon. He fished aboard Fish Whistle from Seaside Park. Jim Leone manged to jig three bluefins on Shimano Butterfly jigs, but the tuna really wanted the scallop guts being discarded by a fleet of scallopers in Chicken Canyon. Bob Correll of Bay Head joined Mike Heaney of Allenwood on his Reel Life from Point Pleasant as they caught five school bluefins -- though only one can be kept on a private boat. Smaller bluefins were trolled in lively waters short of Chicken Canyon, but Heaney managed to jig one out by the scallopers.

Gene Graman of Middletown fished Shrewsbury Rocks with his That's It from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands. Bass of 29 and 30 inches were caught early despite a wind against tide situation. Surprisingly, there was no problem with bluefish.
