Big stripers still in the picture

The rapidly warming waters have been blamed for a big dropoff in striped bass catches recently, but the Joe Tozzi party from Annapolis, Md. was well satisfied with the action experienced this morning as they fished with me and Capt. Hans Kaspersetz on Sheri Berri from Baker's Marina on the Bay in Highlands. As noted in Friday's column, striper fishing last year during the week after the Fourth of July weekend was excellent -- and it appears there may be a repeat of that. We ran to the east in order to find a school of bunkers, and stayed with it throughout a beautiful  morning. It wasn't wild fishing, but Jen O'Leary hooked up first on a live bunker with the lightest outfit aboard, a little Wave Spin reel with a 7-foot Shakespere Ugly Stik, and boated a bass of about 30 pounds. She added another one, before her sister, Tina Tozzi, got into the act with a similar bass. It wasn't until shortly before we headed in that a male finally got some respect when Tom O'Leary used that lighest rod to beat the largest bass -- a 46-inch, 36-pounder.

Capt. Vinnie Vetere, of Katfish Charters in Great Kills, had also hooked up two thresher sharks from those schools while striper fishing a few days ago, but there was no sign of them this morning.

Very warm waters seemed to hurt sharking in the Glory Hole. Capt. Bud McArthur of Brick fished today aboard John Messina's center console. Messina had caught a 130-pound mako there Sunday, but the 77 degree, greenish waters were dead today -- without even a bluefish.

Capt. Ryan Bogan, of Jamaica II from Brielle, said Monday's all-day trip produced four to seven legal fluke for many anglers. Barbara Berger of Hamilton Township took over the monthly pool lead with a 7 13/16-pound fluke -- and teamed with her husband for 12 keepers.

Tank Matraxia of Lyndhurst boated a keeper fluke on the Capt. John from Keyport, but said he had a bad day as the fluking in Raritan Reach was actually quite good. Some others had several keepers and many more shorts.

Bob Correll of Bay Head reports Dom Napoli found few boats in Chicken Canyon on the Fourth, and took advantage of that condition to catch 15 bluefin tuna from his boat.  Correll fished his local surf that morning to catch some 1 1/2-pound blues that had been among the missing.

Allen Riley of South Plainfield hasn't even been finding them very often in the Sandy Hook and Monmouth Beach surf. Other than a few small blues, he's seen only a scattering of short fluke -- and, surprisingly, no sea robins.

Capt. Bob Pennington got into bonito Sunday while jigging small blues along the Shore from his Sea Devil from Point Pleasant.
