Where did the scallopers go?

A fleet of scallop trawlers from all over the east coast has been working in Chicken Canyon for a cople of weeks, and holding school bluefin tuna there while feeding on all the scallop guts being thrown over during the shucking process. However, Capt. Lou Grazioso of Striper Mania was out there Wednesday and was shocked to see only one N.J. scallop boat left. There was no sign of the bluefins, but they'll probably relocate on natural bait ( sand eels or squid) somewhere in the area. Yellowfin trolling has been up and down in Hudson and Lindenkohl canyons, but whilte marlin have been common so far.

Other best bets this weekend include stripers under bunker schools off the south shore of Long Island -- where 500-pound thresher sharks have also been caught. Fluking has been very good in Raritan Reach, with lots of keepers among numerours shorts. All you need is good drifting conditions. Rough bottoms in the ocean are also productive. Jumbo bluefish are abundant offshore of Shrewsbury Rocks, on jigs in daylight, and by chumming at night. Capt. Scotty Hilliard has been loading up with blues on his 3:30 p.m. trip with Prowler V from Atlantic Highlands.

There's still a good chance at cod and ling on deepwater Mud Hole wrecks and Shark River Reef.
