Capt. Ron Santee tried to catch the end of the early morning tide where he'd ended up well Thursday on his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands, but did nothing in two drifts before moving to the Raritan Bay shallows for a good pick. His father, Capt. Ron Sr., and John Foehlic both ended up with five keepers, and the pool fish went 4 pounds. Raritan Reach has been good when there's a proper drift. The Fishermen is chartered Saturday and Sunday mornings, but will sail afternoon trips both days.
The Sandy Hook Bay Anglers Two-Day Tournament out of Atlantic Highlands Municipal Marina will put lots of fluke boats on the grounds. The caprains meeting started at 7 p.m. in the Senior Citizens Building there. The late entry fee is $100 a boat.
As noted in last night's blog, the scallop boats have moved out of Chicken Canyon. Therefore, the tuna fleet is back to square one. Lil' Brother from Brielle Yacht Club went out there today and didn't find any bluefins -- though they probably aren't far away. Hopefully, some boaters will find them over the weekend.
I rarely get crabbing reports, but Jerry Dailey had a good one from last Saturday's 14th annual Nana Dailey Crabfest. Rowboats were rented from Stark's in Brick, and family members loaded up with crabs that had to be a minimum of 6 inches point-to-point, rather than the state minimum of 4.5 inches. Courtney Dailey won Most Valuable Crabber for a huge blueclaw that was 16 inches claw to claw. She was also part of the winning team along with Jerry, Mary Ann and Brian Dailey. It all ended with a huge crab boil as over 150 crabs were caught.
