Party boat daytime trips along the Shore have been mostly for jigging small blues inshore lately, and Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. of the Jamaica from Brielle said even that was poor on Sunday. However, Bogan reporteda big change today as blues up to 15 pounds were chummed inshore, and anglers hooked plenty of them.
Party boat fluking in Raritan Reach held up today. Tank Matraxia of Lyndhurst fished aboat Capt. John from Keyport, and reported decent action under fine conditions. He ended up catching two keepers at the end of the day after returning 14 shorts, but noted that an 81-year-old angler named Ernie had at least five keepers in the bow, including the pool fish.
Allen Riley of South Plainfield reports cownose rays were back in the Monmouth Beach surf this morning. Both he and his brother, Ed of Edison, hooked up on metal, but pulled hooks before landing their rays. Allen also hooked a "midget" blue on metal that was lost in the wash. A positive sign was the sight of spearing or bay anchovies along the beach.
The Sea Girt surf was somewhat rough this morning due to the southwest wind, but I released a 4-pound bluefish that blasted a Zara Spook, and had one other swirl on that surface plug. The only other angler had caught a small striper early, and added a hickory shad on a teaser.
Capt. Tom O'Connor of South Amboy sailed along with a Boy Scout troop from Suffern, N.Y on a Sunday magic hours trip aboard Misty Morn from Morgan, and reported that the youngsters all caught fluke even if most were shorts.
