Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.

John Bushell, of Betty & Nick's in Seaside Park, sent out a note this morning that indicated "false albacore" (little tunny) were being spotted in the Island Beach State Parl surf. That would be very early for a species that normally isn't seen inshore until August -- and peaks in September. Bushell also mentioned fluke in the inlet, some blues in the surf, excellent crabbing off docks, and the first appearances of snapper blues.
Allen Riley of South Plainfield will cheer the arrival of little tunny, but hasn't seen anything to cast for lately in the Monmouth Beach surf. His brother, Ed of Edison, caught a sea robin on metal Friday morning; Lou Vargas of Fanwood used killies in the surf for a 17-inch fluke while also losing a keeper in the wash; and John Bernal of Wilkes-Barre, Pa. released two short fluke.
Capt. Hans Kaspersetz and I, plus Dr. Ray Flagiello of Staten Island, ran over to Long Island before dawn with the intention of seeking a shallow water thresher shark. It took some time in a sloppy sea to find bunkers, and we did see one small boat hook up with a thresher. We snagged baits for the stripers that have been missing during the mornings lately, and noth Hans and I lucked out with 40-inch bass before an early return.
Gene Graman of Middletown worked Ambrose Channel for both stripers and fluke from That's It out of Twin Lights Marina in Highlands, but only came up with short fluke. He noted that schools of bunkers were available, though nothing was marking under them. The water temperature dropped to 64 degrees on the incoming, quite a drop from recent high temperatures.
Mike Heaney ran his Sea Vee from Point Pleasant offshore into a surprisingly rough sea. Whales feeding in the Atlantic Princess area inspired some jigging that produced a small bluefin and dolphin. The VHF chatter indicated that fishing wasn't good at Chicken Canyon, and anglers were complaining about the rough sea.
Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. said Thursday night bluefishing on his Jamaica from Brielle was good 15 miles to the east. Friday started slowly, but ended well with blues from 8 to 14 pounds on both jigs and bait.
The Tackle Box in Hazlet reports blues on poppers, metal and bunker at Port Monmouth. Porgies are hitting sandworms at the Keansburg Pier and the rock piles. Ernie Parodi of Holmdel and Tom Krako of Atlantic Highlands fished the point of the Hook with Spro bucktails tipped with Gulp for limits of fluke up to an 8-pounder.
