Except during migrations, surfcasting with lures usually consists of a lot of casting for a very occasional fish. That's exactly what I was prepared for this morning when I arrived at Sea Girt around first light with the tide way out and a fairly rough surf. Rather than walking right away to an area where I figured there'd be a little more water, I started where I walked on and cast as far as I could with a one-handed outfit(Wave Cast spinner & Shakespeare 7-foot Ugly Stik) just to reach some decent water. Yet, as soon as I got the Zara Spook back to the drop-off, the line tightened and I was fighting a decent fish. It turned out to be a 29 1/4-inch striper, that I released. One cast, one striper -- I should have walked right off. That was really a shot in the dark, though I later got into hickory shad and released five of them on a Joe Blaze teaser fly. The drop in water temperature created by south winds may have activated that bass, but I doubt if there will be anything more than the odd striper to be caught in the surf during mid-summer.
Allen Riley of South Plainfield certainly hasn't seen any game fish in the Monmouth Beach surf, but fluke are showing some promise. As noted in yesterday's blog, Lou Vargas of Fanwood bounced a metal off bottom there to beach a 26 3/4-inch fluke that weighed 6 pounds at Julian's Tackle in Atlantic Highlands. This morning it was Duke Matero of Piscataway fishing a Mann-O-Lure the same way to hook three fluke. One of those would have been in his frying pan tonight, but that keeper shook off in the wash.
Betty & Nick's Tackle in Seaside Park reports some small blues and fluke in the surf, plus those species, houndfish, blackfish and triggerfish in the inlet.
Capt. Jeff Gutman reports the Voyager from Point Pleasant caught a mix of sea bass, ling and cod over the weekend. He'll be fishing for those bottom fish at 7:30 Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Last week's two-day tilefish trip started well before too much wind ruined the drift. Some rosefish and white hake were also boated. Mike Desimone of Long Branch boated a tripleheader of tilefish that included the pool-winning 35-pounder. The Shearwater will be tuna fishing by reservation (732 773-9477) on Thursday and Saturday. Last Friday's trip only produced one big dolphin, but there was a decent bite Saturday. Both an "over and under" were boated as the bluefins ranged from 40 to 65 pounds, and hit both jigs and bait.
Capt. Lou Grazioso of Striper Mania suffered more than a material loss when his car was stolen in Hazlet a couple of days ago, as his four-year-old yellow lab, Dusty, was in the car. Grazioso's tuna tackle, including Shimano rods and reels, was also in the car. Anyone hearing of Shimano tuna tackle being offered for sale by individuals should get in touch with the police and call Grazioso at 732 687-7673 as that clue could lead to recovery of the one thing he's most concerned about -- his dog.
