Some inshore bluefins -- at last

Tuna fishermen tired of making long runs for a shot at their favorite quary may have some hope for an inshore run.  Terrance Archer and Bob Ward signed up for an exploratory open boat trip Saturday on Hi-Flier from Barnegat. Capt. Dave DeGennaro left early and arrived at the North Ridge before 7AM. Soon after putting the second bonito in the cooler, the lures were all covered up from a weed patc --  and the skipper was working on a three rod tangle. He handed the wheel to Archer, and asked him to just go straight for awhile. A half hour later, three miles east of the Ridge, the mess was straightened, the lures clean, and everything deployed again when the small daisy chain in the port outrodder went off hard and a 10-pound dolphin was boated by Ward -- his first ever. Then the starboard outrodder started screaming. That turned out to be a 32 inch, 25 pound bluefin tuna on a hot pink cedar plug for Archer at the area he'd wandered out to.

DeGennaro returned to the same grounds Sunday, this time finding life east of the South Ridge in 70 degree, blue-ish water, with a few tuna birds (storm petrals) , so-so readings, and lots of flying fish. Gene Linder and Rich Hall combined to boat one bonito and fight five bluefins. Four were short of the 27-inch minimum, but a 34 inch, 30-pounder was retained. Saturday's dolphin had flying fish in its stomach, while the tuna were eating small squid. Flying fish within 20 miles of Barnegat Inlet is pretty exotic. Hi-Flier will be sailing open to that area every day, 5 a.m. to 1 p.m., from Friday through Monday. Call 732 330-5674 for reservations.
Capt. Arthur Stokes fished Chicken Canyon on Sunday with his Fintastic from Clarks Landing in Point Pleasant where jigging produced a boated 45-incher, while a 43-incher was released since they only caught "unders". However, quite a few bluefins well over 47 inches have also been caught out there -- including some too large to keep. One other hit didn't hook up.

The water temperature took a dive on the southwest wind, and Gene Graman of Middletown took advantage of that while working down the beach in the middle of the night with his That's It from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands. Eeling didn't attract any bass, but Graman anchored at daylight on a favorite piece that hadn't produced last week in 75 degree waters. It was a different story with the water down to 61 degrees as he and Carlos Rebelo of Keyport picked three bass in the 30-to-to-31-inch class while chunking frozen bunker after first hooking a bluefish. No hot fishing, but a promising sign.
Dave Lilly of Hazlet and his crew had a great fluke bite Saturday on the ocean side where two humpback whales and a school of dolphins were cavorting. There was no action while that was going on, but when the mammals left the fluke turned on. There wasn't the big fluke they were looking for, but lots of 3-to-4-pounders as keepers outnumbered shorts 4-1.
Allen Riley of South Plainfield reports surf fishing at Monmouth Beach remains poor except for short fluke.
