Red hot Sunday afternoon fluking in Sandy Hook Bay

Capt. Rob Semkewyc of the Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands said his Sunday morning trip was just o.k. as he couldn't find a good drift. Jim Driscoll of Middletown was happy with his pool-winning 4.5-pound fluke. Those fish really turned on in the afternoon in Sandy Hook Bay as one angler limited up to the pool-winning 5.3 pounds. Semkewyc said there were many fluke in the 3-to-5-pound class.

Capt. Hans Kaspersetz found the morning fishing to be good enough when he took his daughter-in-law Allison out along with Dr. Ray Flagiello of Staten Island to drift briefly around the tip of the Hook for five keeper fluke on Sheri Berri from Baker's Marina on the Bay.

Capt. Joe Bogan reports fluking is up and down with drifting conditions on his Jamaica II from Brielle, Ed Nolan bagged six fluke up to 8 1/4 pounds on Monday's all-day trip. Donnito Patrick had a 7 1/2-pounder Tuesday morning, while Charlie Scire of Manchester had a 6-pounder on the afternoon trip. Oh Nam from Staten Island boated an 8 1/2-pound fluke.

Mako sharks are still a possibility. Capt. Bud McArthur of Splinter in Brick joined Capt. Niff Ambrosino on Audrey Sue as they fished the Glory Hole on Saturday to catch two makos -- releasing one, and weighing the other at Hoffman's where it scaled 139 pounds. The crew included John Messina of East Hanover, Gerry DeLuisi of Verona, and Ray Lundgren from Pa. Some small dolphin were also caught.
