Howard Bogan Jr. reported very good night fishing though Monday on his Jamaica from Brielle, though daytime fishing had been tough through Tuesday even as hordes of fish were being marked. That was diffent today, with blues from 10 to 16 pounds feeding on the surface and hitting jigs.
Though I haven't been able to confirm it as yet, Capt. Chris De Stefano of Wall heard that the Canyon Runner had a big catch of yellowfin tuna over 50 pounds both trolling and chunking in Hudson Canyon -- and added a 500-pound blue marlin release. Recent catches included a 231-pound bigeye tuna, their largest of the season, and a 300-pound blue marlin.
Surf pro Paul Haertel was poking around wrecks offshore of Long Beach Island again this week when he released a barely legal pollock that was immediately eaten by a 6-to-7-foot hammerhead shark.
