Fishing Report: Port Mansfield TX - July 2011

Fishing is still awesome in Port Mansfield.  The winds have backed off for the most part and the windy days are as uncommon as calm days were back in the spring and early summer. We have found ourselves traveling north a little more than south. We are mostly throwing Ball Tail Shads and paddle tails. The colors vary, but when the water is clear or “trout” green it’s either the new Sand BTS, or chartreuse Blue Metal Flake/Chartreuse tip. Although over the deeper grass beds the Plum blue metal Flake/Chartreuse tip is a steady color. Some folks have been sticking with the 4 inch PT’s in Pumpkinseed /Chartreuse tip, Plum Blue flake/Cool tip and have been producing just the same. On another note Kelley Wigglers now have a new jig head, it’s a 1/8 oz. short shank 2/0 black nickel. I’mthrowing that hook nearly all the time, especially with the BTS.
Trout are steady and consistent and surprisingly still found shallow. The big ones have been found in ankle deep water and under certain clear sky, light wind conditions we have sight casted the biggest ones of the season.
We have also located the reds, finally and they are good ones. Tina with KW steadily caught reds in shallow boggy bottom conditions until she was tired. Most were in the 25-28 inch range. The reds have been found in off colored water rather than clear.
August we’ll find the trout over deep breaks and grass beds and the reds will be schooling up, so we look forward to some great fishing to finish out the summer and the fall fishing frenzy is right around the corner so look out for some awesome fishing, as if it has been bad. ..
