Rain put a damper on fishing

I guess NOAA weather has to be given credit for predicting a lot of rain after midnight. We ended up with a record for the date, and it's still coming down as this is being written. We're down to just a possibility of more rain on Monday, but anglers will have to check conditions in areas where river flows may result in dirty and unproductive waters on the ebb. That might not affect deeper waters such as Ambrose Channel.

Capt. Pete Wagner of Hyper Striper at Twin Lights Marina in Highlands says he's been trolling a few stripers before adding big fluke on bucktails. Brett and Darron Cardinal had fluke up to 6 pounds Thursday. Wagner got offshore Friday to troll 13 yellowfin tuna east of Chicken Canyon. Some were schoolies, but the Ron Marks party from Westwood also had six in the 45-pound class on plastics and balao.

At Brielle, Capt. Joe Bogan said he had ideal conditions Thursday morning as there were often 20-to-30 fluke on at a time from his Jamaica II. Many of them were keepers up to 7 pounds. It was only a pick that afternoon as he lost the drift. Bogan noted that Saturday night bluefishing was very good for choppers up to 16 pounds on bait.

Brielle Tackle reported lots of snappers in Manasquan River, plus some blackfish and triggerfish in Point Pleasant Canal. They also had reports of Spanish and cero mackerel plus dolphin being trolled on small spoons and feathers 2 to 10 miles east of Manasquan Inlet. John Sperco of N.Y.C. jigged rocky bottoms off Long Branch for 7-and-8-pound fluke plus three 4-pounders.

Capt. Jack Shea of Rambunctious out of Waretown said his back bay light tackle fluking is moving into Barnegat Bay channels now. There's still plenty of action, as his parties catch 70 to 75 fluke, though the ratio of shorts to keepers is about 30-1.  A 26-incher was boated last week.

Party boats seeking bluefish during the day are finding mostly 1-to-2-pounders for jigging north of Manasquan Inlet --plus a few fluke on the bottom while doing so.
