Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.

Bottom fishing usually suffers the biggest drop-off after a storm, but sea bass actually may be biting better now. As previously noted, Capt. Bobby Bogan of the Gambler from Point Pleasant is seeing more sea bass of all sizes while drifting five miles east of the inlet. Capt. Bud McArthur of Brick did little with fluke today at Axel Carlsen Reef, but switched to sea bass there and did well with them along with some good-sized porgies and a legal blackfish.
Bob Correll of Bay Head had another good morning of fluking at Manasquan Ridge while fishing with Mike Heaney, Karl Drewig and Joe Reap. They ended up with seven keepers up to a 23-incher, and also caught lots of shorts.
The Jamaica from Brielle reported good catches of big blues at night on bait plus the same size choppers on jigs during the day.
Capt. Hans Kaspersetz and I wormed with Sheri Berri from Baker's Marina on the Bay in Highlands for a couple of hours in Raritan Bay for a pick of short stripers, healthy porgies, and small sea bass. Kaspersetz also boated a 19-inch fluke. The porgies were all keepers, ranging up to 13 inches, they made short work of the beautiful large sandworms from Julian's Tackle in Highlands that were intended for stripers.
Scott Leadbeater of Haddon Heights cast lures in the bay during the incoming tide in the morning, and caught a couple of stripers. He said there was an uncomfortable roll in the bay at that time.
Allen Riley of South Plainfield reports Sandy Hook surf fishing is terrible. Not only were there no fish caught, but the bait that had been evident a couple of days earlier was gone.
Offshore reports remain poor, but Capt. Chris De Stefano said he heard a bigeye tuna of about 110 pounds had been entered in the ongoing Manasquan River Marlin & Tuna Club Offshore Tournament.
