Blues looking better

After a very tough summer, it appears that bluefishing is finally getting consistent. The Jamaica from Brielle had another good night catch Monday in the Mud Hole area, with the blues running from 7 to 14 pounds. That boat will make its first canyon tuna trip of the season Saturday at 5 p.m.

The Cock Robin from Point Pleasant has had some unusual variety while bluefishing on a wreck the last two days.  Capt. Jim O'Grady reported a Monday mix of pollock and cod with the blues. Today there were more pollock, and they had their first little tunny of the season hooked. Tomorrow's trip targets the little tunny and bonito that have been missing so far.

John Bushell reports from Betty & Nick's in Seaside Park that schools of mullet have been spotted near the inlet, and at 9th Ave. in Seaside Park.

I've been surfcasting areas north of  Manasquan Inlet. An occassional school striper is caught, though with water temperatires still over 70 degrees the bass encountered now are surely residents rather than migratory fish. I keep casting as far as I can, but the very few bass I've caught so far have all been in the wash. A 21-incher hit a yellow Bomber this morning just before the lure hit the beach.

Allen Riley of South Plainfield said fishing remains poor at Sandy Hook despite the presence of bait near the surf. Tiley caught the morning's only fish, a small blue. Bait fishermen didn't even catch sea robins.
