After a summer of unreliable bluefishing, it appears bluefish are settling in at the Mud Hole. The Jamaica from Brielle had a good catch there Saturday night.
The east wind combined the big southeast wind made for an uncomfortable day at sea on Sunday. Capt. Arthur Stokes attempted to get to offshore wrecks for the last day of the sea bass season until Nov. 1, but it was so nasty at sea that he turned around even though Fintastic from Clarks Landing is a heavy boat capable of handing any reasonable blow. This was one of those days when it seems calm inland, but the east wind creates much different conditions on the ocean.
Surfcasters fishing with clams being washed up on beaches managed to catch some school stripers. Greg Bogan at Brielle Tackle even reported a 30-incher for Joe Sommer of Manasquan, his first legal striper. Ed Divonna of Manasquan fished his local beach with clams to catch 10 schoolies from sunrise to 9 a.m. Bogan also reports Manasquan River is full of 10-to-12-inch snappers, and blackfish are hitting green crabs at the inlet jetty.
John Bushell, at Betty & Nick's in Seaside Park, reported anglers fishing bunker in front of Atlantic Bar & Grill on Saturday were catching lots of small blues. There was a report of an angler coming off J St. in Seaside Park today with a 32-inch striper -- and another of about 20 pounds. Both hit clams.
Capt. Joe Bogan of Jamaica II at Brielle reports last week's fluking was tough due to the big swells. However, Brian Christiano of Philadelphia had four fluke plus seven sea bass up to a 4 1/2-pounder, and Phil Gartner from Farmingdale caught five fluke to 4 pounds. Bogan noted that the September pool leader only has a 5-pound, 6-ounce entry that should be easy to beat for a year's free fishing on that boat.
Chris Lido, editor of The Fisherman, N.J. Edition. had a fine bachelor party trip aboard Capt. Art Hilliard's Eagle from Atlantic Highlands on Saturday. After bottom fishing at Sandy Hook Reef wasn't productive, Hilliard moved to bottom north of Shrewsbury Rocks for action with sea bass, jumbo porgies, and several legal blackfish.
Surf pro Paul Haertel ran his boat 15 miles off Island Beach State Park on Saturday to catch 18 sea bass, of which 12 were legal up to 3.6 pounds, plus five short fluke and two snapper blues. He also had an unusual double as a seagull grabbed his squid on one hook as he dropped it over -- and a shearwater then grabbed the other squid on the two-hook rig. The shearwater got off, but Haertel had to unhook the gull.
