Albacore & yellowfins hitting in canyons

Canyon fishing has broken open again. The two Canyon Runner boats trolled 60 albacore in three hours Tuesday, and the Jamaica from Brielle limited on yellowfin tuna that day. Adam La Rosa says here's an opening Friday for a single reservation at $725 on the 60-foot Ritchie Howell. Call 732 272-4445 for info. Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. said dolphin fishing...

Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. said dolphin fishing was the first thing on Tuesday's agenda of his Jamaica from Brielle until they ran across a school of tuna in daytime. A four-hour drift produced tuna and skipjacks on both bait and jigs. Some tuna were caught right away when the Jamaica anchored for the night, but the hot bite occured at 5:30 a.m. Jigs, bait and poppers all worked on yellowfins up to 60 pounds as everyone limited on that species. A couple of swordfish were released at night. The Jamaica sails 21-hour canyon trips at 5 p.m. Sept. 25 and 30 plus Oct. 1 and 2. Thirty-hour tuna/tilefish/mahi trips depart Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 a.m. Call 732 528-5014 for reservations.

Capt. Stan Zagleski said fluking has been so poor that he couldn't stand another day of it, and won't be sailing again until switching to porgies and blackfish at 7 a.m. Saturday with Elaine B. from Highlands.

Capt. Scotty Hilliard switched to stripers and porgies today with Prowler V from Atlantic Highlands. He had a pick of short stripers early, but changed to porgies for a good catch. Hilliard reported a hot bite of big blues Saturday night at the Mud Buoy. He's chartered this Saturday, but will be sailing Friday and Sunday nights.

Capt. Dave DeGennaro is taking individual daily reservations on his Hi-Flier from Barnegat for offshore fishing.  He'll be looking at Barnegat Ridge, but will run off to the Mud Hole if good water evades him there. As a last resort, he'll fish Shrewsbury Rocks for stripers and blues. Call him at 732 330-5674.

Romer Shoal was a disappointment today for Gene Graman of Middletown on his That's It from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands. A week ago we released 25 bass there, and only four were under 28 inches. Tuesday we struggled for just five shorts in poor conditions -- but conditions were ideal today -- yet there was no action. Graman pulled anchor seven times, but never got into a bite. We ended up catching two small dogfish and a sea robin on clams. I hooked the only striper, and fought a 15-pounder almost to the boat only to watch the 8/0 circle hook pop out of its mouth. Circle hooks rarely pull once set.
