Surf looking better after northeaster

The wind moderated today, but the surf remained rough due to a big swell. Conditions were actually good for stripers except for the low tides at dawn and dusk. However, the tides should be in our favor later in the week. Betty & Nick's in Seaside Park reports mullet were surfacing last night, and netters loaded up on that bait as stripers were heard popping on them.  Small blues were hitting mullet baits in the morning at Island Beach State Park.

I've been fishing structure north of Manasquan Inlet, and saw a couple of schoolies plugged this morning -- though I didn't get a hit on metal in the rough surf. I was back at it this evening to try a Bagley's Mullet plug, and managed two schoolies.

The Jamaica from Brielle is sailing a 30-hour canyon trip at 6 a.m. Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. has room, and says anglers can just show up for the trip without reservations. Another such trip will be run Thursday.

The Canyon Runner from Point Pleasant had a couple of cancellations this week on the 60-foot Ritchie Howell for Tuesday to Wednesday or Wednesday to Thursday. A charter, or individual reservations are possible. Call Adam La Rosa at 732 272-4445.

The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant reported fine bluefishing for choppers up to 15 pounds today, but a bonito and little tunny trip is set for Tuesday at 6 a.m.

Capt. Ron Santee, of the Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands, reported the good news that his father, Capt. Ron Santee Sr., had a heart valve successfully implanted yesterday, and is well on the road to recovery. He tried for fluke for the first time in a week today, and found it no better than before. As a result, he's giving up the rest of the fluke season that runs to Sept. 25, and will switch to stripers on Sunday.

Anne Marie Steepy, formerly of Highlands, fished with her husband, Capt. Dick Steepy of Big PineKey, Fl. on the weekend to release a 50-pound sailfish.  John Mosca, Matt Boyce and Tom McSorley from Elmwood Park were aboard to add dolphin, yellowtail snappers and grouper.

Capt. Russ Binns has scheduled additional Coast Boating School safe boating courses leading to the state boating certificate as follows:

Sept. 28 & 29- Brick Elks Club, 7 to 10:30 p.m.

    "     "   "   " - Lake Hopatcong Elks Club, 7 to 10:30 p.m.

Oct. 10 & 11 - West Marine, Perth Amboy, 6 to 9:30 p.m.

   "   17 & 18 - West Marine, Toms River, 6 to 9:30 p.m.

   "     "  "   "  - West Marine, Lodi, 6:30 to 10 p.m.
