Adam La Rosa reports the two Canyon Runner boats have caught over 250 tuna by trolling and chunking in the last few days -- plus eight swordfish up to a season best of 300 pounds. He calls it "The best fishing in the last 4 years". Some individual opening are available. Call 732 272-4445.
Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. reported a very good Saturday night canyon trip on his Jamaica from Brielle. The hot bite didn't occur until 4:30 a.m., when over 40 tuna were boated -- primarily on jigs. Up to 10 were being fought at a time. Drifting after sunrise produced some dolphin plus more tuna. Room is available on Thursday's 7 a.m. 30-hour trip, plus 21-hour trips at 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Call 732 528-5014 for reservations.
After doing nothing while clamming Romer Shoal on Sunday, Gene Graman of Middletown took a shot at chunking frozen bunker on rough bottom down the beach on Monday. Freddy Fessel and I accompanied Graman on his That's It from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands as we picked a few big blues on the ebb. My first cast with a bunker chunk produced a 12-inch sea bass, but after that we caught only lots of small sea bass with light tackle and squid -- though it didn't make any difference what size they were because the season is closed. We each also released a large triggerfish. Graman stayed for the change to incoming, when I finally nailed a 32-inch striper among the blues before coming in as fog was thickening.
The fresh bunker we'd have preferred to use are thick further south. Bob Correll of Bay Head found schools of them both north to Spring Lake and South to Bay Head on Sunday while running his Boston Whaler 23 out of Manasquan Inlet. He said the abundance of bunker was just like spring -- except that there weren't any predators under them.
Capt. Pete Wagner, of Hyper Striper from Twin Lights reported a good catch of legal stripers along with shorts during his Monday afternoon trip for the Rodrigo De Francisco party from Elizabeth.
Capt. Jim O'Grady reported limits of 5-to-15-pound bluefish during Monday's trip of his Cock Robin from Point Pleasant.
Allen Rileyof South Plainfield finally got into some surf action Monday morning at Sandy Hook,. It was just a brief flurry, but Riley and his friends managed to catch five small blues as those choppers attacked bait that had been spotted during the morning.
