Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.

It finally felt a bit like striper weather today, even if the water remains in the upper sixties and there aren't likely to be any migratory stripers around until it drops much lower. Nevertheless, that chill provided some inspiration. In the case of Dave Lilly from Hazlet, it got him across to the N.Y. side to bump into some bunkers being attacked by stripers and big blues, leading to non-stop action while trolling Stretch plugs. In other cases, such as mine, it only inspired an effort in the surf despite a dead low tide at dawn. I didn't see anything caught at Sea Girt, but I found barely enough water to cast into and was surprised by a stargazer that hit a Bagley's Mullet plug. It took about 10 minutes to get the belly hook of the plug out of the stargazer's mouth, but it shot away when I returned it to the surf as if nothing had happened. A small fluke also made a pass at the plug, and got snagged.
The first large striper of the fall season brought into Betty & Nick's Tackle in Seaside Park was a 28 1/2-pounder weighed Saturday by Jared Beneduce of Wayne. He was casting metal and a teaser into the surf. John Bushell reported a hot bite of small blues in the surf Saturday on bunker. I'll try to obtain the results of today's Governor's Surf Fishing Tournament by tomorrow.
Capt. Rob Semkewyc is seeking stripers daily with his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands. He reported a few bass and a couple of big blues today.
At Brielle, Capt. Joe Bogan said his inshore bottom fishing has produced up to 40 porgies a man on Jamaica II, while Mud Hole trips are good for ling and some cod. Mac Dubois of Bristol, Pa. bagged 16 ling and four cod.
Brielle Tackle reported that eleven-year-old Quinn Figueroa of Point Pleasant boated a 50-pound yellowfin tuna on the Jamaica. Mark Mantlick of Brielle has been using a snapper popper and small metal in Manasquan Inlet and River to catch both snappers and small blues up to 3 pounds. There was amention of 1-to-3-pound blues in the surf, but I haven't seen any choppers there lately.
