The Long Beach Island Surf Fishing Classic is underway, and big stripers are already being beached on bait. Gary Taylor of Mt. Holly took a substantial lead on Saturday with a 41.56-pounder that hit bunker at Barnegat Light. Jeffrey Schlicher of Surf City is second with a 30.31-pound striper taken on an eel Saturday at Ship Bottom. A most unusual bait accounted for the third place 24.69-pounder taken today by Richard Sellnow of Yardville -- on a kingfish head. Large bluefish have been as scarce for surfcasters at LBI as in other areas, with only two weighed so far. Francis Pons of Surf City leads at 10.1 pounds with a chopper taken on bunker at Loveladies on Monday.
Capt. Bobby Bogan reported another good canyon trip for30-to-60-pound yellowfin tuna on Monday night with his Gambler from Point Pleasant despite too much boat traffic in the good waters from Spencer to Wilmington canyons. Bogan expects to be canyon fishing into November.
The Cock Robin from Point Pleasant postponed today's Mud Hole tuna trip due to the weather, and will run it next Wednesday, Oct. 19. Capt. Jim O'Grady said Tuesday's bluefishing was very good.
There were no boat reports today due to the forecast of small craft warnings for northeast winds. I fished the surf briefly, and was able to get good casts into a rough surf with a 3-ounce Tsunami SlimWave metal. However, there was no sign of stripers. Another angler told me he was out in his 20-footer the day before and ran north to find working birds over 30-inch stripers that hit jigs -- and there were no bluefish.
Betty & Nick's in Seaside Park reported that some big blues were caught Wednesday on mullet at the south end of Island Beach State Park. There was also a very brief striper blitz in the park Tuesday when bunkers were chased in for 15 minutes, and a couple of 20-to-25-pound stripers were caught on snagged bunkers.
Joe Melillo at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant weighed a 25-pound striper on Sunday for John Yahr of Brick who was in his boat off Point Pleasant among the bunkers when a bass finally got interested in a head.
