Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
This week's northeast winds should stir up stripers, but boaters will have to fight strong westerly winds over the weekend. Gale warnings are posted for southwest winds tonight and Saturday. The northeast wind certainly didn't hurt already good clamming and eeling for stripers at the mouth of Raritan Bay. Capt. Pete Wagner of Hyper Striper from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands had a limit catch on clams Thursday afternoon in two hours for the Manaf Saker party. Capt. Rob Semkewyc had enough anglers to sail this morning with his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands, and had a good catch of both shorts and keepers -- presumably on clams. Gene Graman of Middletown used eels again, and limited today on bass with Freddie Fessel of Middletown on That's It from Twin Lights. Since it was foggy in Ambrose Channel, those bass were caught in Sandy Hook Channel.
Capt. Sal Cursi of Cathy Sea from Sewaren has received word that some bass and more blues are finally feeding on peanut bunkers in Raritan Bay.
The surf was discolored this morning when I tried surfcasting at Sea Girt, but it was quite fishable with metal even though there was no sign of life. Nevertheless, Joe Melillo had some stripers weighed at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant. Clams were the best bet, as Greg Lambert of Edison caught a 14-pound bass at Normandy Beach; Sam Conner from Manchester beached a 14 3/8-pounder at Mantoloking; James Vaccaro had an 11 9/16-pounder at Bay Head; and Ted Walters of Livingston clammed a 12 3/16-pounder south of Manasquan Inlet. The lone lure report was a 15-pound bass by Bill Lavorix of Long Branch at Sea Girt. Terry Martuscelli of Brick fished Manasquan River for stripers of 10 1/2 and 15 pounds.
Blackfishing has been very good in Point Pleasant Canal, but Melillo said green crabs haven't been available from any of the bait distributors. However, the tautog will also hit clams.
Capt. Dave DeGennaro of Hi-Flier at Barnegat wants to work the bunker schools that have been popping up along the Shore. He'll be running open by reservation. Call 732 330-5674.
