Boaters hoping for less southwest wind than during Saturday's gale-force predictions were disappointed to find themselves fighting 25-to-30-mph southwest winds today. Bob Correll of Bay Head and I fished with Capt. Joe Massa on his My Three Sons from Morgan Marina, clamming in a fleet off Sandy Hook. There was a hot bite of skates, including some big ones, but we did scratch out three keeper bass in the 30-inch class plus three shorts before moving to Shrewsbury Rocks. The Grady White was swinging too much on a single anchor, and only one of the blackfish we caught was a keeper -- though porgies hit clams on every drop. Though there were lots of birds looking around, we never saw any over fish on a day that looked as if there should be hot jigging. Word over the VHF indicated that most boaters were finding the same thing.
At Atlantic Highlands, Capt. Tom Buban has switched his Atlantic Star from half-days to a single daily trip from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for bottom fishing for porgies and the one blackfish per person presently allowed.
Capt. Ron Santee of the Fishermen said he only picked at stripers on clams early, but ended up with a good catch in the nastiest location. Bass ranged up to 34 inches.
Capt. Rob Semkewyc of the Sea Hunter clammed a pick of keeper bass up to an 18-pounder plus shorts.
Capt. Howard Bogan Jr. cancelled today's canyon trip on the Jamaica from Brielle due to the wind, but has room on Tuesday's 30-hour trip at 7 a.m. Bogan said that in addition to the hot tuna fishing to the south, there's good water east of Hudson Canyon that's moving closer. Call 732 528-5014 for reservations.
Dave Lilly of Hazlet fished Shrewsbury River with worms today with Charlie Parker on his Triiton as they did well with keeper bass as well as shorts.
Capt. Jack Shea of Rambunctious from Waretown fished the back bay for eight stripers up to 36 inches early last week. George Selph caught two stripers up to 35 inches on live spot in Barnegat Inlet today.
