Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
The rest of the week doesn't look too good due to rain and wind, but the weekend is shaping up great with light northwest winds. Small craft warnings are up from now into Thursday. Hopefully this storm will end up sparking the long-awaited fall striper migration. That is quite a contrast to today, when I enjoyed what may have...

That is quite a contrast to today, when I enjoyed what may have been the last shirtsleeve day of the year while fishing with Gene Graman of Middletown on That's It from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands. Fred Fessel of Middletown and Craig Little from Flemington were also aboard as we eeled to no avail in Ambrose Channel on the ebb. We saw a couple of bass caught on other boats, which kept us there longer than we should have. Back in Sandy Hook Channel, we had quite a few bites, but most didn't hook up. The reason why became clear when only one of the four bass caught (three by Fessel) turned out to be a keeper. The bites stopped suddenly as the sun went down, even though the tide was still overcoming a light but cool east wind.
Capt. Jim O'Grady had to cancel his second stright Wednesday inshore tuna trip on the Cock Robin from Point Pleasant, due to the weather forecast -- and has rescheduled for next Wednesday. O'Grady said bluefishing was very good today on bait, with most being big choppers. Yesterday it was jigging that produced big blues plus a 37-inch striper.
Allen Riley of South Plainfield didn't see much bait before dawn in the Sandy Hook surf, but missed two good hits while plugging in calm conditions. Duke Matero of Piscataway got two small blues on metal before beaching the catch of the day -- a stargazer estimated at 6 pounds. Riley said there were some other anglers casting this morning, and they reported catching some small bass and blues on metal.
The Tackle Box in Hazlet weighed in a 28 3/4-pound striper taken on a live eel off Sandy Hook by Justin Flikkema of the Asbury Park Fishing Club. Kurt Widlitz of Flemington weighed a 13-pound blue jigged on an Ava at the Mud Buoy.
