Fishing has started in the Hi-Mar Striper Club Fall Tournament, and anglers will be looking for mates to the two big bass that were caught locally the last couple of days. The Tackle Box in Hazlet weighed a 41-pounder caught on bunker from the Spy House Pier by Shaun De Vincenzo of Keansburg. Capt. Ford Coles said Capt. Mike Greco started out well by clamming from his Westwind out of Leonardo for John Kinkard of Springfield, as that angler caught four stripers up to 42 inches. There were no shorts, and the bite died by 7:30. They then trolled between the channels, where a 40.72-pound striper hit the shad rig. Unfortunately, that was the only catch out there -- no shorts and no blues.
It was the same thing at Shrewsbury Rocks for Frank Criscola's Crisdel from Brielle Yacht Club. Capt. Chris De Stefano was aboard, and he called late in the morning to report they'd scratched out only four bass trolling shad rigs -- though one was a 26-pounder. Strangely, there were no shorts -- and no blues in an area usually loaded with them.
The Golden Eagle from Belmar jigged and baited for a reported catch of 38 bass. Andrew Sokol was high hook with seven shorts. He said there were three keepers on the boat.
Betty & Nick's in Seaside Park reported weighing in an 11-pound striper caught in the surf on bunker. There had been a big bluefish blitz the day before in Island Beach State Park by a buggy fisherman who didn't see any birds on them, but spotted the tails while riding the beach.
At Atlantic Highlands, Capt. Rob Semkewyc had some flurries of legal bass on clams, and ended up with a decent catch on his Sea Hunter. A attempt to find the jigging fish located on Tuesday wasn't successful.
Surfcasting along the Shore has been generally tough, and I didn't find it any different this morning at Sea Girt.
Joe Melillo had only one striper weighed in the last few days, a 14 3/8-pounder on clam from the Bay Head surf by Tom Hayes of Brick. Melillo said clams have been the best bet in the local surf, but the most reliable fishing is for blackfish in Point Pleasant Canal -- and green crabs are back in stock.
Capt. Jim O'Grady didn't find any stripers, but had another big catch of mixed size blues on his Cock Robin from Point Pleasant. Bait was much better than jigs today.
