Jig fishing opening up

The northwest wind was good news for some party boat anglers fishing with jigs. At Atlantic Highlands, Capt. Ron Santee reported big blues plus a few stripers up to a 31-pounder on his Fishermen. The northwest wind was good news for some party boat anglers fishing with jigs. At Atlantic Highlands, Capt. Ron Santee reported big blues plus a few stripers up to a 31-pounder on his Fishermen. Capt.  Rob Semkewyc of the Sea Hunter had very good jigging for blues along with 16 bass on his Sea Hunter.

The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant wasn't far away from Manasquan Inlet when birds were sighted with blues from 10 pounds up to the 16-pound pool winner plus over 20 stripers under them.

Tank Matraxia and his Lyndhurst crew had a charter with Capt. Fletcher Chayes on his Riverman from Bahrs Landing in Highlands. An attempt to catch stripers in the Shrewsbury wasn't successful, before a run to Shrewsbury Rocks produced a mid-teens striper on an eel for Matraxia plus some blues. Chayes ran down to Deal, where a bunker school produced big bass yesterday, but only found blues there. Netting some bunkers, he ran back to the Rocks where Matraxia caught another striper on a bunker.

Gene Graman of Middletown hooked some bass on eels in Ambrose Channel from his That's It out of Twin Lights Marina in Highlands, but it was too rough to fish right in the northwester.

I hardly felt that wind when I fished the surf at Sea Girt early in the morning. Conditions were perfect, but there was no sign of fish or bait.

Joe Melillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant, said local surfcasting wasn't good even though an angler reported bunkers close to the beach -- but with nothing on them. Blackfishing continues in Point Pleasant Canal, and the green crab scarcity is over.
