Inshore and San Diego Bay Fish Report

nelson-may-2012-report-haliAs is typical this time of year, our both nearshore and bay fishing is going from good to better, and should be excellent very soon. Hard-fighting bonefish are biting with a vengeance in the bay. But bay sharks are the flavor of the week right now, especially for the kids. We have been getting smoothhounds, leopards, and shovel-nosed sharks. The spotted bay bass are starting their summer fling, and can be best caught fishing deep (25-45 foot depths) using slow-sinking presentations. 1/4 to 3/4 ounce leadheads dressed with your favorite grub will usually do the trick. Outside the bay, calico bass and sand bass are showing up quite well in numbers with a few bigger ones mixed in. The sand bass are migrating deeper and should start their spawning routine any day now. We have seen some rockfish mixed in out there as well, mainly boccaccio and some vermillion on recent trips.

Halibut are starting to feed heavily as they recover from the spawn. Drifting dropshot and dropper loop rigs have proved to be the most effective methods for them. All three islands have been producing good halibut fishing the last few weeks. Yellowtail have been showing up in local waters (north of the border) with more regularity, and we've been catching barracuda lately as well in local waters. Like I said, our nearshore and bay fishing is going from good to better, and should be excellent very soon.
