Late July Offshore Fishing. Giant 460# BROADBILL!

 | By Seamus on 7/26/2012 8:18:45 PM | Views (185)

The weather has been beautiful here the past week while Deep Sea Fishing Islamorada. The fishing was very good a few days ago, but got pretty tough the last couple of days. There were a few great catches mixed in from a few of the boats, but overall the Mahi really thinned out. About 1/2 of the boats have been finding some while the other 1/2 just never come across any. Captain Paul on the Relentless has been consistent the past few days catching anywhere from a few to about 15 fish, including some nice slammers in the 20 - 25 lb range. The good thing about Islamorada though is there's always an alternative when one type of fishing doesn't produce. There's been some "football" blackfin tuna around the humps, as well as some big almaco jacks to 25 lbs. The Reef Fishing has been a safer bet for action the past few days. There's been quite a few yellowtail snapper, mangrove snapper, mutton snapper, as well as a few king mackerel. The daytime swordfishing has been providing some action as well. Captain Nick on the Bn'M had Vinnie and Rocco out on the 26th and both caught their first broadbill swordfish. Little did we know that we'd hook a giant that afternoon. At about 2 p.m. Vinnie got in the chair and after a 90 minute battle, with the most spectacular jumps I've ever seen, we boated one of the largest swordfish ever caught on Rod and Reel in the Florida Keys. The big fish weighed in at 460 lbs!!! The Catch of a lifetime! The Kalex and Catch 22 each caught a broadbill yesterday as well. The Kalex released theirs and the Catch 22 boated theirs, a 145 lber. Hopefully the mahi bite picks up and gets a little more consistent for the offshore boats the next few days.
