10-21-12 October Fishing Report for the Florida Keys

 | By Seamus on 10/19/2012 7:32:24 PM | Views (357)

The Fishing in October in the Florida Keys continues to provide plenty of action both offshore and in the backcountry. Capt. Richard Stanczyk took the BNM out yesterday with his good friend Vic Gaspeny (daytime swordfish pioneer angler) and managed to catch 2 broadbill swordfish. They had a couple bites early that they couldn't hook, but then on the 3rd drop they caught about a 60 lb swordfish. For the next drop Hunter rigged up a fresh mahi belly and Vic let it down. Within minutes they had hooked a swordfish, a big swordfish. The fish came up from 1800' and gave the guys a look at him, before taking out 1500' of line back towards the bottom. They knew the fish was 300 plus pounds at this point. An hour later they had the fish 30' away when he made a blistering run taking out another 1200' of line! After a total fight time of 100 minutes they had the fish boat side and sank the gaffs into a fat 365 lb Broadbill! The third biggest of Vic's angling career, number 203 and counting for him. The Islamorada Reef Fishing  has been good too the last few days. The Reel McCoy has been HOT on the sails, releasing 4 today, 3 yesterday, and 2 the day before. He's also had a handful of snapper and cero mackerel for dinner each trip. The Kalex had a great catch of dinner fish too today. They had cero mackerel, yellowtail snapper, mutton snapper, and yellow jacks. It looks like the wind is going to blow hard this coming week, making for some choppy conditions, but the reef fishing should still be fine. Hopefully things settle down and we'll be able to get back out for some swordfishing charters. Remember the swordfish caught here are reeled in on conventional (NON-Electric) Tackle! And we can't forget the 41 lb Black Grouper caught aboard the Miss Islamorada , Islamorada Party Boat, John was patient all day and caught the monstrous grouper by waiting it out...
