3-10-13 Islamorada Deep Sea Fishing Report

The wind was blowing a steady 15 - 20 knots out of the ENE today, but a lot of the islamorada offshore charter boats still got out for some fishing! The past few days haven't provided easy/red hot fishing, but the guys have been putting together some decent catches. There's been a few nice quality fish caught every day, and when it's your turn you better not miss! Anyhow, today a few boats stayed on the reef and some boats went further offshore to fish the humps. On the Reef the Bn'M targeted the tasty yellowtail snapper and by the end of the day had a nice catch of 30 yellowtails for dinner, the Relentless also had some yellowtails for dinner and then tried for some king mackerel but it was a little slow in the afternoon. The Fearless did a morning trip and caught a handful of king mackerel. Florida Keys Offshore Fishing in March on the Hump (which is a large underwater sea mountain) the catch 22 reported catching a couple "football" blackfin tunas and then a couple amberjacks, altough a shark bit one a few times. The Predator also had some action with some "Football" tunas (2 - 5 lbs and are the size of a football), and then hooked a big shark but didn't land it. The Reel McCoy hooked one sailfish but unfortunately it jumped off, they did have a bunch of action with barracudas for fun though. The Redfish had a big 14 lb mutton snapper, and then another 5 lb mutton and a couple king mackerel as well. Yesterday the bonito (little tunny) bite was on! They are great fighters and members of the tuna family, but we usually just use them for bait or release them. There was a few sailfish released though in the midst of the bonito bite. The Man O' War, Kalex, and Reel McCoy each released one, the Reel McCoy also had a cobia pushing 60 lbs! The Bn'M caught a couple king mackerel, including 1 nice "smoker" king weighing 24 lbs, a couple big crevalle jacks, some barracudas, and some lane snappers for dinner, the Fearless caught a handful of king mackerel and a lone mahi for dinner too. The That's Right had a good day on the reef almost limiting out on yellowtail snapper and caught a suprise cobia at the bait patch that weighed 35 lbs! The day before there was some nice schools of cobia moving through, with both legal and sub legal fish. The Gold Digger had a 50 lber, the Bn'M and Gon Fishin V each had 35 lbers. The Bn'M also released a sailfish and had a couple king mackerel, and the Gold Digger had a bunch of action with Barracudas. The Cloud Nine had 2 sailfish released and a few king mackerel including a 35 lb smoker! The Redfish caught a nice 30 lb wahoo on monofilament leader!, a mahi, several king makerel, and somne bonitos. Overall the fishing is fair, not a ton of anything, but if you're patient and put your time in for quality fish you should get a couple of shots, if you want action on the reef you should be able to keep occupied between the various species! We will start heading further out with more consistency soon while Islamorada Fishing.
