3-12-13 Offshore fishing Islamorada in mid March

 | By Seamus on 3/12/2013 3:05:57 AM | Views (150)

The past couple days have been on the windy side, but that can be typical while Fishing in Islamorada in March. Today most of the offshore fishing charters got out, but unfortuantely with an 18 - 20 knot wind a lot of boats came home early. The fishing is still on the fair side, not red hot but there's action to be had. A few boats did morning 1/2 day trips and the Reel McCoy, Kalex, and Man O War each released a sailfish. There was also a few mahi caught between them as well as a few snappers. The Predator and Bn'M both got in on one of the best king mackerel bites of the year today. They each had their limit of king mackerel, including a few "smoker" kings up to 31 lbs. The Bn'M also had a decent mutton snapper and the Predator had a bucket full of tasty yellowtail snapper. The Pretty Work fished further out and had some big pulls. The caught two amberjack in the 40 - 50 lb range, a few schoolie mahi, and a few blackfin tuna up to about 10 lbs. Yesterday the Catch 22, Predator, and Bn'M all went offshore too. They all caught some "football" blackfin tunas (tuna in the 2 - 5 lb range, which look like footballs). The Catch 22 headed back towards the reef after some tuna action and caught a nice 10 lb mutton snapper and released some barracudas. On the Reef the Fearless caught a handful of king mackerel, including one nice one about 20 lbs. The Kalex went out on two trips and the afternoon definitely turned on for them. They had 3 mutton snapper to 8 lbs, a few cero mackerel, and a bucket full of yellowtail snapper. The Bn'M stayed offshore and caught a couple amberjack in the 30 - 35 lb range, and then tried for some sharks! They released a 275 lb bull shark just before lunch, but put the baits back out to try for another big shark. After an hour and a half they had a bit. Jamie fought the best for an hour and two minutes before getting the massive 600 lb tiger shark boat side! They took a few pictures and some video before releasing the shark to fight another day. Shark fishing in Islamorada in the Spring time is usually pretty good, so if that interests  you give us a call! There is another cold front coming through late tonight, which will probably shake things up once again, but the guys will figure out whats best to fish for. Remember, Fishing in March is a little bit of everything and you should fish for the what conditions allow!
