4-10-13 Offshore Fishing Islamorada in April

 | By Seamus on 4/7/2013 8:55:26 PM | Views (106)

It's still been pretty busy for the islamorada offshore charter boats at bud n mary's marina the past few days. The big push of families visiting on Spring Break is definitely at the end, but there's still plnety of people down here enjoying some Islamorada Fishing! The Reef (3-5 miles out) has still been the safest bet for consistent fishing. There's been a decent yellowtail snapper bite the past few days along with a few mutton snapper mixed in. The mackerel bite slowed down some, but there's still a few kings and ceros around. The Permit have been schooling up around some of the local wrecks, as they do every spring to spawn, so we have also been having some action with those. We catch and release all of them and some are big, real big, 30+ pounds! There's been a few mahi around the edge of the reef as well as some offshore a little further. The bite hasn't been extremely consistent, a few boats will catch a handful while a few boats won't see any. Most of the fish have been schoolies (3 - 5 lbs), but there's been a couple decent bulls mixed in up to 20 lbs. Around some of the deeper wrecks and sea moutains there's been plenty of amberjack as well. They are great fighters and will put any person to the test. Most have been from 30 - 50 lbs. There's also been some good shark fishing lately too. There's been a couple tiger sharks caught further offshore up to 500 lbs. April is kind of funny in Islamorada since there's a little bit of everything to be caught, and the wind and currents play a big key in day to day fishing. Yesterday one boat had 6 sailfish releases but today there was only 1 release combined between the fleet. The current had switched completely. The cobia bite slowed down some the past few days as well but there has still been a couple nice ones put on the dock between the boats. I've seen quite a few tasty vermillion snapper caught lately too, they're a bright pink and are delicious!
