Fishing: Good

 As Autumn approaches, we begin to see some significant shifts in insect and fish behavior.  That is, primetime dry fly fishing tends to be in the late morning or afternoon, “the heat of the day.”  Sunny days will see caddis and perhaps more intense and diverse mayfly hatches.  Colder, overcast days can see caddis and mayfly hatches, albeit less diverse & the dry fly window can be small.

However, nymphing is always worth the effort as fish still have to continually eat even if there is no hatch and the weather is inclimate. 

The usual suspects for this time of year: Little Green Stone, Caddis, October Caddis, PMDs, BWOs, Mahogany Dun, Midges, Kokanee Egg, Flesh Fly.

Be careful wading…there are many fresh Kokanee redds !!  Stepping on these will destroy the eggs.  Look for redds in slower, shallow currents, with small pea-sized gravel, especially below riffles and islands.  The fish move substrate around so look for “clean” circles free of river growth.  Also look for basketball sized mound of gravel (referred to as “pillow”) with a small “pit,” or hole just upstream from pillow where fish moved the gravel to burry the eggs.
