Hooking Up Anglers Since 2011.
The usual suspects for this time of year include: BWO, PMD, Little Green Stone, several different caddis species including October Caddis, Mahogany Duns, Midges.
I’m still seeing Golden Stones, Little Yellow Stones, and a few Green Drakes but these insects are fading fast and will probably be gone by the end of October.
The Kokanee have arrived in full force! They are beginning to get ripe so egg patterns and flesh flies are in the mix as well. Be careful wading…there are many fresh Kokanee redds !! Stepping on these will destroy the eggs. Look for redds in slower, shallow currents, with small pea-sised gravel, especially below riffles and islands. The fish move substrate around so look for “clean” circles free of river growth. Also look for basketball sised mound of gravel (refered to as “pillow”) with a small “pit,” or hole just upstream from pillow where fish moved the gravel to burry the eggs.
