Fishing: Great

When the dog days of summer hit, The Met is a great place to enjoy fishing.  While other area rivers see the mid-day blues due to high air temps and high water temps, The Met’s clear and cold waters keep mid-day fishing productive.  I continue to see nice PMD hatches, sometimes several a day.  Caddis have been a little slower than previous years, but are definitely available to fish.  Golden Stones continue to hold our attention in the upper river.  Lots of bugs on the water!  Our list of usual suspects hasn’t changed much and hatch diversity will stay about the same til we head into September.  Keep an eye out for: Golden Stones, PMDs, Caddis, Green Sally, Yellow Sally, PEDs, BWOs, and Midges.

Shop Tip: With so much aquatic macro invertebrate diversity right now, observation becomes just as important as fly selection and presentation.  These fish see a lot of natural insects this time of year.  I really take my time dissecting a hatch before I even think of beginning to cast a fly to rising fish.  Complex hatches are common and the ability to recognize which insect a fish is focused on is essential to consistent success.  Sometimes a fish is focused on a particular life-stage of an insect.  Great river to sharpen your match-the-hatch abilities.  Be patient!  The lessons learned on The Met will make you a good fisher!

Bull Trout:  Are best targeted when the sun is off the water (morning / evening) but are available all day.  7 wt rod, 10+ lb leader, streamer-type fly, and concentrate on deep pools and tail outs.
