Metolius River - July 12th 2012

Another beautiful week on The Met.  We are seeing a lot more consistencey in the hatches.  Hatch diversity continues to remain high.  Having a well stocked fly box is essential this time of year.  It’s safe to say the Green Drake hatch is pretty much done.  However, you may still pick up a fish on a GD dry.  Some fish have a hard time letting go of the GDs!  The good news is the Golden Stone hatch is alive and well in the upper river.  Fish will move on-and-off this hatch so be prepared with the other menu items: Caddis, PMDs, Sallies, Midges, a few PEDs, and even BWOs during the cooler parts of the day.

Shop Tip: I know I harp on this point but… success on The Met this time of year depends on a couple of things: (1) With such a diversity and abundance of insects hatching, fish will move from hatch to hatch on a daily basis (and sometimes hourly).  That is, one day they are focused on one bug and the next day they won’t touch it.  Having several different patterns of each relevant insect representing several different life-stages, gives you the ability to match not just the hatch but also the small nuances the fish pick up on.  (2) Presentation, presentation, presentation.  What ever it takes to get a good dead-drift.  These fish see enough naturals to know what a real bug looks like floating down the river.  Oftentimes, especially in softer water, 6x is required.

Bull Trout:  Consistent fishing in the cooler parts of the day and spotty action during the heat of the day.  Be careful with this Threatened Species.  A long, drawn-out fight in this heat can really damage these fish.  Having at least a 7 weight rod (I personally use a 9 wt) allows you to get that pig in quick and lessens the chance of fighting the fish to death.
